If you have a goal, work as hard as you can to reach it. UM has lots of resources, money, good faculty, activities. To me it was an almost perfect place to do good work and recharge at the beach. Like everywhere, one cannot expect to be spoon-fed. Use your initiative and don't underestimate the fact that you can also guide your profs into helping you. Most people are out for themselves. A prof who's only interested in their own work and using you to get it done will be only of partial benefit for you.
