Are you white? Are you male? If so, then within your first couple of semesters here at Oberlin you will be CONVINCED that YOU are the root of all that is wrong with the world. Apparently, according to rougly 70% of the faculty and perhaps 80% of the students, the white male has done nothing right since he evolved. This sort of "liberal" thinking is what draws "diversity" to this campus. Ironically(I used the aforementioned quotations cynically), the very ideal they are trying to encourage has totally saturated free thinking on this campus, hence, it is now overun with extreme liberal automatons, spewing forth like-minded ideals while chastising those with different viewpoints. Doesn't exactly sound like the liberal minded and diverse mecca that this school tries to promote does it?Luckily for me, there have been a few saving graces since I have been here, most namely, my "area scholar" scholarship. I was fortunate enough to get a nearly free ride because of my family being a resident of Oberlin, and for that I am thankful. Also, even though, in my opinion, the social climate is disproportionately extreme, the college DOES enjoy a nice academic reputation, which I am looking forward to augmenting my grad school application at Georgetown with.In summary, Oberlin enjoys a great academic reputation which will challenge you intellectualy, and later reward you with a fairly respected degree to place in your grad school admission package. However, if you have an alternative(ie. moderate to conservative) viewpoint, be prepared to be alienated by the majority of the campus. If you are a self-proclaimed free-thinking "liberal", then enjoy these four years, because the socialogical bubblegum ideology that you embrace here will burst when faced with the tests of reality and true human nature.
