I was a student at Rice from 78-82. During student orientation, the senior student advisors had a saying
you have to experience it to understand it.
Such was the truth about Rice. I cannot begin to explain what is so wonderful about Rice because I have not had experiences either before or after Rice that can be used for meaningful comparison. My experiences at Rice bordered on magical and fantastical realms. Rice provided a wide range of incredible experiences in both academic studies and extra-curricular activities. The student body was brilliant, yet open-minded and excited about learning. There was minimal to no competition among the students.

In the science courses that I took, much of the weekly homework was assigned to be done in groups. In fact, several professors gave weekly homework assignments that were so challenging that they would tell us that they expected everyone to work together to find the solutions. Rarely did an individual find the solution completely on their own, and if they did, they were expected to share their solution with others. I do not know if Rice still has this sort of attitude about learning; but I believe that the university continues to place value on learning, knowledge, and experience well over simply memorizing answers and getting grades.

I was shocked when I entered Medical School. The classes were nowhere near as challenging. The excitement and joy involved in the material as presented by Rice professors was lacking. The students were much more focused on the grades rather than the content. I have missed the quality of education provided at Rice ever since I left. Med school education was intellectually cheap, boring, easy, and sophomoric by comparison to Rice.

Rice prepared me to think, analyze, and develop novel solutions. I had no multiple-choice exams past the freshman year. I also learned to value other people’s input and to work in teams.

20 years later, I still have frequent dreams of being at Rice. I always wake happy, but disappointed that it was only a dream. In my fantasy world, the ideal world would be a life of continuous on-campus enrollment at Rice.
