USF has an excellent advertising campaign. Every picture or article on the school website or brochures about the reputation of the school is misleading.

The campus..some areas of the campus are pretty. The rest of the buildings need serious work. Schools of the big majors (Biomedical Sciences/Chemistry/Nursing/Psych) are overfunded and renovated while the other schools have old, musty classrooms that have been standing strong since the 1970's.

The campus is not safe at night. I was a freshmen resident for the 2005-2006 academic year and we had a murder on campus..in which university and tampa police could not find the suspects or reasons to why the murder occurred. I will never forget the posters USF police posted in the resident hall dorms asking students to keep an eye out for suspects.

The surrounding city is worse. I never felt safe leaving the campus in the day or night time. What I am about to report can be percieved as racist, but it is the cold truth. I am a white female from a predominately white community. USF is located in the outskirts of Tampa, a predominately immigrant/poor, lower-class slum town. You are likely to be ambushed at the mall by aspiring rappers trying to get you to buy their demos or someone trying to coerce you into a drug deal. Cars are broken into frequently on and off campus and the police have made no procedure to correct this injustice. Break-ins of vehicles have happened in parking lots right next to the campus police station.

This is a commuter school. It is catered to commuter students. No big college atmosphere. Greeks do not bask in the social sunlight.

The professors and student body are perfectly matched for one another. Both do not seem to put much effort or care into their careers and education.

I do not care what the college reviews or any other "guide" states…this college has an equal population of mixed ethnic groups to caucasians. African Americans have the potential to out number white students. If this is an issue for you, go to FSU.
