Suffolk University is a very good school to get an education. But there are some major drawbacks for some.

Pros -

  • Excellent, intelligent professors who are helpful and enjoy teaching
  • Strong curriculum
  • Administration is alert and interested in students interests and needs
  • All classes are small
  • Workload isn't overbearing with pointless assignments
  • School is very "real world" oriented with internships, co-op, many career seminars, etc.
  • Good honors opportunities
  • City of Boston has alot to offer for fun as well as again offering "real world" experiences
  • Relatively inexpensive when compared to other private schools in the area
  • Many study abroad opportunities
  • Cons -

  • There is NO campus, just a few buildings located relatively close to each other in busy Downtown Boston
  • Very limited campus facilities like gyms lounges etc.
  • Very limited, yet very nice and expensive housing
  • No school spirit, limited activites to get involved in
  • School feels like an upscale community college, majority of students commute, come to school for class, and leave. Everybody is always in a hurry
  • Many students are snobby and not very intelligent, but not all are like this
  • Most of the students are from the immediate area around Boston, it seems like everyone I meet knows somebody I went to high school with (this isn't desirable to me at least)
  • All of this means that it is hard to make friends and to feel any connection or pride with the school
  • If you need to go to a school where you will get a quality education on a budget, especially if you will need to commute from home, then Suffolk is a great place.

If you really want to experience the "college life" and make lots of new friends and experiences then Suffolk really isn't the place, even if you are going to live on campus.
