Having graduated more than 15 years ago, I assume that the place has changed a lot, but I do have one comment that's still relevant. One big advantage of going to school in NYC is that people stick around afterwards. I still have many close friends from my college days, and a big reason is that so many have stayed in New York (mostly in Park Slope, Brooklyn). Obviously, places like Ithaca or Amherst don't have much post-college attraction, but even fairly big cities like Boston don't seem to hold people in their orbit nearly as much as New York.
