Major: Art & Design Department (This Major's Salary over time)
What a great school … if you are self-motivated, know who you are, are willing to grab it rather than have it handed to you. The chief difficulty is that many students are pseudo-liberal … they posture but they haven't a clue what it means to truly liberal. They will talk about insclusivity but be catty behind people's backs. Not all. Not most. But some. And it was a distinct turnoff. The profs for the most part are better. Some even "off the record" admitted that this turned them off as well to some students and some professors. Gay and lesbian students, sad to say, ran the gamut from inclusive and tolerant to catty and judgmental.Nevertheless, one could be who he or she is for the most part with the students you respected and the faculty you liked. I'm "artsy west coast" and this was a caricature to some students and a few profs and a good description to others. When my boy friend came to campus, a cross dresser artist from an artsy village in Northern California, it was intersting to see which profs found this no big deal and which "liberals" tightened their body posture. Thanks to those who celebrated him and offered us a bed room for a week. And thanks to the prof—you know who you are—who took us to New York for a conflab with a prof from Pratt where both boy friend and I wore short, short leather skirts, fishnets and tall boots!! And professor and his girl friend both dressed similarly!! Ah, yes, Oberlin at its best.Oberlin is good when it is what it professes and needs to say to a few faculty and some students that what it professes it really means. Be yourself. You like business suits, men (and women) so go for it. I won't call you out if you don't call me out.
