JMU has traditionally been regarded as one of the more reputable schools in the state of Virginia - which is a great thing considering VA has one of the better collections of schools in the country.

That being said, it is no secret that JMU's prestige is declining fast. Most people in the academic community would no longer put JMU in the top five - and that is def. not a biased statement (UVa, W&M, Mason, UR and UMW are all better academic institutions)

JMU is now known as a tier-2 party school. It has a similar feel to Radford University, in a variety of ways, although it DOES have a MUCH better academic reputation.

JMU students and alumni are awful prideful of their school, and often get really defensive about JMU - they typically has a skewed sense of JMU's reputation throughout the state. JMU IS a legitimate, reputable school, but its not what it used to be…

responseI have to agree with you JMU has turned into a party crazed school. Just look at the most recent riots that took place this past spring. Nonetheless, it's not altogether the school's fault because they don't blatantly condone the constant partying; however, they are still partly to blame for the quality of students that they select to admit. I just transferred back to my home state of Jersey. There will probably still be parties at my new school; however, I'm hoping I won't have to run into a group of students who criticize me 24/7 because I stated that I didn't care for their school, and yes, there are die-hards that will make your life very difficult if you make any remarks that are remotely negative towards JMU. Some people will love JMU and I simply say good for them. However, some, such as myself and the author of this post will find out the hard way and realize that JMU is not for everyone.
