EMU is what you make of it. The class sizes are very small and remind me of high school which means annoying homework, projects, group work etc… (all the stuff you thought you were escaping when you graduate). Some may find this as a plus that your entire grade isn't based entirely on 3 exams, I however; do not, I would rather pay attention in class, study, then do good on my exams, and have ample free time. The campus is really nice, dense, and centralized, it really has that old college academia feel to it. Lost of security to make you feel safe at night, the food is pretty good but you will get sick of it; for the most part its all fast food so beware of the freshmen 15, as it really exists here. The dorms are dorms, not much you can expect the freshmen dorms are pretty typical suit style, I lived in downing this year and loved it, the layout is nice and spacious, I would recommend it. The freshmen dorms get a little roudy but the other halls are quite for the most part, not a lot of partying going on; security is TIGHT due to the shitty area and showing up drunk to the dorms is not easy to get away with like at state or central. The surrounding city of Ypsilanti is horrible, not a safe place to be at night unless your close to campus, with a group of people, or not a pretty girl. There are a lot of rapes, murders, shootings, break-ins, and muggings that happen on a weekly basis, the town does have some nice spots like depot down (which is nice but has almost nothing to do) and Cross St. As for Social life this is a strong point of the university. Most of the people you meet in your dorms are pretty chill and easy to make friends with, not to cliquey, not a lot of stuck up people. There is a lot of partying going on off campus in the student houses and apartments. It's a pretty tight knit group of people partying at the same 15 or so houses but its a blast! The Fraternities are a fucking joke… theres like 2 or 3 that actually party the rest are abandoned? IDK but they suck. The house parties are where its at; trick is to meet some one thats in the loop and its not hard to get into the circle of parties. This party scene is all the residents… commuters do a lot of shit in the apartments and stuff etc… but its pretty small. the area north of campus is filled with apartments (which is like 80% black kids). That is where a lot of the shooting happens so i wouldn't recommend that area, its not very safe. The area directly south of campus is where all the houses and apts are, primarily the white college students… that's where all the parties are and most the greek houses, Normal street, and olive street are hot party spots. There are more black people than normal at this university, so if your black this may be a bit more comfortable than others for you, if your white it may be a bit of a culture shock but its not that crazy most of the black kids are from the west side of detroit and are legit, but the east side kids are wack… watch out for them seriously. Oh and guys if your looking for tail… this isn't the spot… 7's here are treated like 10's and have tons of options, and utilize those options quite frequently. If you don't have good game you won't get laid. Most of the best looking chicks here are commuters along with 70% of the school btw. Ann arbor is right down the street (10 minutes away) which is an amazing city with so much shit to do, the university of Michigan is there, huge party school, one of the biggest in michigan, they're like our sister school so they let emu kids into their parties… If anything is going on at emu head to the university of Michigan always massive parties with tons of babes.
