Date: May 30 2010
Major: Business - Management and Administration (This Major's Salary over time)
I just finished my freshman year of Suffolk university in the Sawyer Business school.

Teachers: 3/4th of your teachers will not be native speakers. In fact the math department should have a Russian flag over it. This can be great when you try to impersonate your teacher?s accents with your classmates after class and make hilarious inside jokes about their broken English. They will have experience, one of my professors was in the Tiananmen Square protests and another is the CEO of Kabloom and helped found STAPLES. On the downside some of the accents are so heavy you only understand one word in every sentence and that really destroys any comprehension you could have had of the subject. (Accents I had my freshman year: Albanian, Israeli, African, Beijing, Russian).

Extra Curricular activities: Everything that is school related meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm to 2pm, there are no classes during these times. This can really suck when you want to do multiple things and they are all going on at the same time in different places. The athletics here are sparsely attended, supposedly Suffolk has a rivalry with Emerson but since so few people attend the sporting events it doesn?t really exist.

Reasons for attending: 85% acceptance rate is the key statistic you need to know. I?ve asked around and there are only two reasons why people decided to attend Suffolk. 1st They wanted to live in Boston, a city they have loved since childhood and have heard great things happened at the colleges in the Boston area, and this is in the center of Boston so it must have something good. The 2nd reason is because Suffolk gave that particular student the most money in scholarships and aid.

Reasons for leaving: I?ve asked around the class of 2013 and from my own personal poll it appears that 70% of the freshman class is transferring or attempting to transfer out of Suffolk. Schools being departed for include Bentley, Northeastern, BU, UMASS Amherst and UMASS Dartmouth. IT SEEMS THAT PEOPLE REALIZED THERE WAS MORE TO COLLEGE THEN JUST BEING IN THE CENTER OF A GREAT CITY

Resources: The OCHO (Off Campus Housing Organization) and the Career resources center are next to useless, they will be happy to show you their software, but beyond that they have no good ideas. The Job fairs here are a joke, I even overheard a teacher talk to a colleague about how bad they were, you have a much better chance of finding a job on Craigslist then through what Suffolk offers. There are a lot of great internship opportunities in the Boston area however there is a common rule that the intern must receive college credit for the internship. Trying to get this credit from Suffolk University is the hardest bureaucratic mess I?ve ever had the misfortune to wade through. I went through a string of seven different offices trying to find out who would give credit for an internship, each office passed me off to the next. It was the first of many experiences that made me realize that none of the departments or offices has any idea what anyone else is doing.

Social Life: Rules to having an amazing social life at Suffolk: You need a fake ID, you need to know people at other schools in the Boston area (especially Northeastern and BU), you need to know people who have apartments in Beacon Hill and Allston. If you don?t have any of these your social life on the weekends will consist of drinking in your dorm room and smoking weed on Boston Common.

Dorm Life: The dorm buildings are one of the few things Suffolk got pretty close to right on. The rooms are great, some of the rooms at 150 Tremont and Miller Hall have million dollar views. The buildings and bathrooms are cleaned daily.

Food: The food is unhealthy and terrible. First semester I ate it I constantly had dierhea it?s a constant rumor that they put laxitives in the food. If you live in the dorms they force you to buy a meal plan (unless you live at 10 west).

Administration: They will constantly remind people at ceremonies that they desegregated before Harvard back in the early 1900s, apparently that was the last progressive thing they ever did.

In conclusion the most important thing I learned about Suffolk University is that it is a business, not so much a place to learn but a business to make money. There is no spirit or heart in the school. There is the heart of the city but that doesn?t transfer over to the university that well. Most of the students are already rich and just going through the motions of college and have a pretty good future set up for them. Some people like the school but nobody loves it, there is rarely any enthusiasm for anything.

questionHey I live in Boston and I'm transferring to suffolk next semester hopefully. I liked Ur review and wanted to ask you a question. Just email me back
Thanks - marcela
commentThere is a considerable measure of awesome entry level position openings in the Boston range however there is a typical thought that the understudy must get school acknowledgment for the temporary job. Attempting to get this credit from Suffolk University is the hardest bureaucratic chaos at any point you had the setback to swim through claims thesis writing services and offer their help with admissions.
