MY TOPIC SENTENCE : THE SCHOOL IS A JOKE ! I honestly have no idea how they can call it a university. I do respect the schools roots as an HBCU but it is now more of a haven for black kids who do not want to do any work through middle and high school but are still given a government funded chance at university. I will go through several topics of interest. 1) QUICK INTRO ON ME i am an international athlete who was placed at this school by default of my scholarship at a big 10 school not going through correctly ; i come from a mixed race family and therefore have no biases towards any skin color etc 2) THE STUDENT BODY of course as expected at an HBCU the student body is 95% black so any diversity the school promotes is bull****. The problem is where most of these kids come from they are taught to only hang around people of their own skin color and actually refer to any non blacks as "THE WHITE MAN". The mindset is that everything should be PRO BLACK and people of other skin colors are completely shunned at the school. Personally though coming from a mixed background i look mainly like a "white" person and was as i said; shunned. When people found out I was mixed I was then accepted into social life…this I found apalling. Many of the students are very racist and closeminded on things such as diversity, pluralism and clearly from my experience mixed race relationships and such. However some students are very friendly once you get past the cliquey stage. You would think 90% of the students walking around campus have just come from a rap video shoot in the projects somewhere with the way they dress. Because of this fact it is very hard to tell the difference between a student and gang members who often frequent the school premise. 3)SAFETY the campus police is awful. I had 3 gun instances in my dormitory first year along with witnessing over 15 fights and hearing about numberous robberies as to where campus police does jack sh**. All of these occasions are covered up so as to not reach the news and make the schools rep any worse than it is. Robberies from outside gang members are prevelant and non students can be seen on campus and in dorms 24/7. Campus security does however do a good job of towing cars and giving parking tickets. 4)CAMPUS/FOOD campus is decently good looking id give it a 5/10. 2 of the dorm halls are absolutely disgusting and look like government funded projects from the 1920's. Dorms are very basic and some are surprisingly clean while others are absolutely disgusting. It takes forever to get maintenance done in your dorm if needed as well. There is also usually a huge shortage in housing. As for campus activities there is nothing to do . The athletic facility closes on weekends for everyone including athletes such as myself. There is a student union that has old pool tables and old video games; but they cost money to play. The union is also not open on weekends and closes at about 10pm on weekdays. Fast food on campus is only available at the union (when open) which is limeted to a 3 restaraunt selection that is highly over priced. The cafeteria food is partly disgusting partly good. There are about 5 stations with only about 2 that change the menu daily. Most of the time when the kitchen offers a type of better food it is not cooked properly and tastes awful. Many of a time you are stuck eating pizza and hamburgers which get nasty after the first week. The cafeteria is constantly over crowded and seats are rarely available. Also the cafeteria is only open at certain hours for at the most 3 hours at a time which is highly inconvenient. 5)STAFF AND FACULTY to many persons surprise the nicest faculty around campus is definately the cleaning crews for dorms and such. They were without a doubt the best people i met on campus and the coolest to hangout with to chat every now and then at the bottom of your dorm. Some of the cafeteria ladies are also very nice who i made great friends with. Most of the faculty and staff are very friendly and nice while few others are very arrogant rude and racist. The professors are mainly nice with a few of them being absolute a**holes stuck up on the fact that they got an education and are now "proffessors of the highest standard" teaching at their alma mater. 7) EDUCATION the education here is a joke - my roomate was doing 3rd year accounting that i learned in the 11th grade. Teachers have to easy the courseload and difficulty so much due the majority of students that make up the student body barely made it out of high school. Once i realized this I hardly attended any classes bought no bookes and skipped many exams only to still make the Honor Roll both semesters. I have heard however there are a few very knowledgeable people in calculus and physics with some great proffessors as well. Realistically an 9th grader could easily complete the senior year courses here. 8) SOCIAL LIFE there is no social life here, parties are extinct everyone wants to go to the same club week in week out. along with nothing ever going on on campus the surrounding city is a ghetto with nothing to do unless you attend areas outside of durham such as chapel hill or raleigh that are frequented by Duke, NC State or UNC students (which is a good thing). The greek life is a laughing matter as i have never seen a worse set of frats or sororities in my life. Greek life was hardly ever present on campus and was simply just a joke. ATHLETICS most of the athletic teams here are garbage. Yet basketball and football players are still hailed as kings when each team may have won a max of 4 games each a year and can barely acquire more than a couple hundred in attendance. many students do not even know about teams such as the bowling, tennis or golf teams which happen to be the best teams on campus.

this is quite a lengthy review but i hope it helps. It is tough coming to this school if you are not black and from a socio-economic standing of the surrounding area. There are many great people but hard to find. Do not come here if you are a minority, looking to get a good education have a good social life or excel in your athletics. A pro-black agenda of everything is always pushed and the topic of slavery is also always in the air further shunning minority students. If you want an experience of a crap high school with dormitories then this is the place for you.
