Let's be honest: B.U. is basically a school for not very bright or motivated students from upper-middle class backgrounds (mainly from Long Island and the Tri-State area). Thanks to former President John Silber who turned B.U. into a Big Business similar to Exxon or IBM, it is now al about the $$. If your parents have $$, you can get into the school even if your are dumb as rocks because the school doesn't have to dole out financial aid. I went there and I can tell you that the most intelligent and non-apathetic students there are the ones on financial aid. Everone else got admitted because their parents paid in cash and are looked at as potential donors. Those are the students that are ridiculously stupid and unelightened and really should be going to a junior college. But alas, B.U. has set up a money-seeking Colleg of Basic Studies Program. Its basically a high-priced junior college within BU for fairly un-intelligent and unmotivated students who want to say they go to a privtate univeristy rather than a j.c.. Then, BU admits these j.c. students to the mainstream BU program regardless of grades or low SAT scores (which are a given since they are in Basic Studies to begin with) if and ONLY IF - the j.c students parents can pay in full!!! How do I know? Not only was I a B.U student but I briefly worked in the admissions office as well!!!
