I absolutely love Drake. I fell in love with the campus during my tour. The amount of thought and preparation the university puts into the social and personal development of the students is obvious from the beginning. From summer orientation to the extended welcome weekend I met so many amazing people from literally all over the country and world. There are so many things to do on campus nearly every night of the week that it is difficult to decide what to do. Des Moines as a city has embraced Drake, as well. Students get discounts nearly everywhere. I get free shoes bowling, a discount at the Civic Center, and plenty of other free or discounted items. Another thing I love about Drake is the strong sense of community. For example, when the Westboro Baptist Church showed up to protest discussions at the law school which were regarding same-sex marriages, an enormous crowd showed up for a counter-protest wearing supportive shirts, carrying signs, and even singing. More importantly, the counter-protest was not opposing the view of Westboro. We stood together with members of the community to protest the hate that Westboro preaches. The courses I have taken here and even just the people (both students and faculty) are very open minded and love to discuss all sides of a topic. Drake fosters academic, personal, and social growth through a commitment to the individual and to the community.
