Major: Electrical Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
Mines is considered an Engineering institution. However the Engineering department is horribly neglected. The university advertises a student to faculty ration of 15 to 1. In reality it is 45 to 1 even in upper junior to senior level courses. If you don't count their adjunct the ratio is even worse. If you are a mechanical, you will have a small under funded miss- managed machine shop with poor facilities. If you are an electrical you will face a tsunami of incompetent adjunct faculty. In any other institution you would come close to achieving a BS Engineering and a Masters degree for the credit hours it will take you just to get the BS at Mines. The philosophy of the institution is that we are Engineers first then we have our discipline second. If you are an EE this comes at great cost since you will spend your time in Mechanics of Materials, Fluids and a few other classes of no use to an EE. Employers have taken notice and some tech companies have stopped hiring Mines EE's because of the neglect of core subjects. The tech support on the campus computers is pathetic and you will have to camp over night just to log on to one. The university lacks a coherent campus wide printing policy. Parking seems to be a making someone millions and as a whole the university does not seem to be the hotbed of technology that it has a reputation for. This university has severe administrative issues and appears to be stuck in the 60?s or 70?s as the posters in Brown Building halls will confirm. With a slogan of Earth Energy and Environment, no efficiency or green building concerns seem to have gone into any of their buildings or new ongoing construction. I am sorry for the bad write-up but hopefully the bad press will eventually get the administration to reform and make change for the better.
