I chose to attend the University of Georgia when I did not get adequate financial aid to attend my dream school. Though disappointed I wouldn't be going to my first choice, I enrolled in UGA with an open mind.

I should have taken out a loan (and this is coming from a pragmatic individual that is fully aware of how difficult student loans are to pay off). My experience at UGA has been miserable?worse than I ever could have imagined. I had always heard there was "so much to do in Athens" and that it had a "great social scene." It turns out that means there is an absurd number of bars downtown that anyone can get into?tape a zero over the "4" in 1994 on your license and you're in. Walk downtown thursday to sunday night and you?ll find a bunch of shallow individuals that have nothing better to do than drown their vapidity in alcohol, getting drunk off their asses (and not one weekend night, mind you; every night starting thursday and ending sunday morning). Enjoy the smell of stale piss and puke after the weekend. And hey, if that isn?t enough for you, you?ll have the luck to hear about all the exciting (aka enormously redundant) things and people individuals did when they were ?so fucked up thursday (or friday or saturday or sunday) night.? There?s not much else to do for those that tire of boozing it up every weekend. Athens is a pretty boring college town (not eclectic whatsoever, although that's to be expected based on the students attending) and alcohol is definitely the focus as you can see by counting the number of bars. It does have a decent music scene, but the music doesn?t outweigh the rest of the experience, at least in my eyes.

As for the ?great social scene?… The homogeneity of the campus is enormously depressing. If you?re into the naughty southern belle or racist southern gentlemen, this is your heaven. The campus is consumed by Greek life?sorority/fraternity events and empty sex. Pretty much everyone is about the same (having the mentality of an immature high-schooler who for the first time doesn?t have a curfew and has never seen the point of all that ed-you-mah-cation anyway). If you aren?t in a sorority or fraternity, it?ll be considerably harder to make friends (although, to be honest, if you?re friends with one individual in a sorority/fraternity, there?s really not much of a point to befriend any of the others, they?re all so similar). If you aren?t into football and alcohol being the focal point of your socialization, it?ll be even harder to make friends. For those that may think all colleges will have such a focus on alcohol and I'm over-exagerating or being prude, I'd like to relay this story: two friends from high school who did considerably more partying than me were (happily) amazed with their experience in Athens, saying how awesome it was that everyone just got drunk all the time here (of course, they had a far different opinion than me about their experience, but this should solidify my argument—if you love alcohol, you'll love UGA. If drinking is no more than a casual, infrequent activity for you, it'll get old. And fast.)

Saturday game days offer a colorful variety of parents trying to live their own college days by tailgating (EVERYWHERE on campus) with their children? funny the first time around, depressing all the subsequent viewings.

The academics are sub-par, especially considering UGA?s growing academic reputation. I took 15 credit hours this semester and had an ample amount of free time. My biology class was a joke, easier than the few on-level classes I had taken in high school. I?ll definitely be increasing the work load next semester.

As for the campus, I don?t find it even moderately attractive (dead and lifeless) but a lot of people disagree with me on that, even other people who also dislike the school, so I suggest touring it to come to your own conclusion on that.

To be fair, the staff has been great. All of my teachers have been passionate about their subject (even the TAs) and have made themselves available out of class for any questions. If nothing else, this has been a positive about attending UGA.

None of the above was an exaggeration. If you felt apprehensive with any part of it, seriously consider looking elsewhere for your undergraduate education. I know I?ll be doing so after this year.

responseHonestly? You should stop by the Center for Student Organizations. You'll quickly find your place. This review was such an exaggeration. By the way, your freshman year is supposed to be easy. Wait until you take organic chemistry or genetics. UGA is one of the best schools for biology. I don't know why you would want to leave. This is coming from an honors student by the way. I know what I'm talking about. I'm a chemistry major, and as you might expect, I'm pre-med. For anyone reading this, if you have been accepted, give UGA a chance. Not only is the school's reputation growing, but the campus environment is too.

These negative reviews are upsetting.

commentBeen in this town a little over a year. While he students are polite making friends is about impossible unless you like to gossip are drink ehavelity. Try suppoting their sports teams. Unless you know people already no one will talk to other fans at sporting events except football. The adults are nasty and Athens police are the worst I have seen of any place in the country. Oh and there is zero respect for your personal property.from dog owners. So unless you are in a fraternity or sorority good like being around the students who do not socialize anywhere outside their click. Much worse than high school. Unless you are a black and ask every single white woman where she is partying you won't have any luck. Try being a single White man and ask a woman where she is partying. You will probably be mocked and beat-up. The town folk are just plain nasty. Stay away from the town of Athens, Georgia. It's a real dung heap.
