I am finishing up my first year here at Framingham State University and I do not plan on returning next year. I ended up choosing this school because it was affordable and they offered the major that I wanted. Over a year later, I simply could not be more disappointed in my experience at Framingham State. Starting off with academics…I have not found my classes to be particularly difficult and it has been rather easy to get good grades without putting in much effort. I expected to be challenged and while it is nice to not have to put in so much effort, I know I will not benefit in the long run. Students here do not seem overly concerned about their education and many show up late to class and blatantly ignore the professors. Academics aside, social life on campus is very poor. Most of my good friends are people within my major who happen to be commuters and have no interest in sticking around at school when their classes are done for the day. Student involvement in clubs and activities is rather low, as well, making it somewhat difficult to meet people. Surprisingly, the residence halls are not overly conducive to meeting new people either. Most people keep their doors shut and are not overly friendly or interested in meeting new people. Also detrimental to the social life on campus is the fact that a majority of resident students go home on the weekends. During the tours and info sessions, the guides ensure prospective students that there is plenty to do do on the weekends and that lots of people stay on campus, but this just isn't true. Just visit campus on any given Friday afternoon or Sunday evening and you will see cars lining up in front of the residence halls either bringing people home or dropping people back off. I frequently compare this university to high school referring to it as "Route 9 High" due to the overall feel of the campus. The student body is very "cliquey" and people are very much attached to their old lives back home. One final thing I would like to comment on is the ratio of men to women. The school is 67% women and 37% men. I love women as much as the next guy, but I feel like more of a balance is needed. I acknowledge the fact that this school may be better suited for some more than others, and that is just fine. You just have to ask yourself what you are hoping to get out of your college experience. In my opinion, Framingham State does not offer the traditional "college experience," has mediocre academics, and has a subpar social life.
