Damn… Im black and something was telling me the diversity in Michigan cant be what its cracked up to be. I dont mind people acting a certain way towards me ,Im used to that. But if I cant find anyone else to hang out with for 4 years? Shit,Id rather stay in my home state and go to the hellhole that is GA Tech, atleast its diverse and I wouldnt have to deal with stuff like this. Really hope you find a way to make your experience alot better. |
Im the same guy who left the first comment. Here later to just say how ignorant my comment was… No one is out to hate against people of color at UM, I was born n raised in Ohio, and I ran into plenty racism there but even still I didnt find anything like how this poster is describing. She sounds sour and just negative. And again, I regret my first comment. GL to any other minorities coming here. |
As a MIXED ethnicity student, I didn't feel accepted at this school either. The way Eminem says in his song, "people act like they've never seen a white person before" (regarding rapping), about sums up how I felt at UM as a mixed person. Is he mexican? black? some other asianey thing? |
Major: Biology (This Major's Salary over time)
This school is not for people of color. Well, not for BLACK people. It seems like every other race is accepted at this school. I think the biggest problems arise for Black students who are not product of athletic scholarships and handouts. A cluster of us worked our asses off to get here and people don't appreciate. The biggest difference is how people treat a black athlete versus a black student science major. I guess a black person who's jumping around like a money for the university is placed at a higher value than a black student in the sciences. "A nigger can't be too smart" because it's a threat. Honestly, I've had the worse time here and people wonder why the transfer rate for blacks is so high. If I could choose I would've gone to an HBCU but the University lied and yelled at this bullshit about "diversity". Where is it? Not here!! The best thing is that when something racist happens like the defacing of the ethnic departmnet in Haven hall or an extremely offensive video of Da'Quan being passed around the campus…so one cares. No one addresses it then call us (black students) crazy for feeling offended like racism doesn't motherfucking exist on this campus. I have to prove myself over and over again before I can even be considered as group partner, I've developed anxiety issues because of the blatant disrespect and ignorant comments being thrown without regard to anyone's feelings. It's amazing just how ignorant some people are…I can't. I'll graduate at this University because I'm paying money and a degree from this school looks great but these past 2 years ( and I'm sure the future 2 will be) have been absolute shit. Too many pompus rich white kids with no type of regard for those who are different than themselves…don't even try to fucking correct it.
