I am a current first year student at Carthage. The school is not what college should be like. The school is full of close-minded people, including the faculty. Many of the students at Carthage are all the same. Everyone has their own clique and is content with that. No one is willing to invite others to be a part of their group. The campus itself creates a closed off environment because the dorms house sorority and fraternity floors. The tour guides play this off as "cool", but in reality it causes issues in meeting people. Plus, sometimes freshman get stuck on these special floors and are stuck being the only ones not a part of the sorority or fraternity. The whole campus has a poor sense of community. The semester is almost over and I know absolutely no one on my floor, let alone the rest of campus. Who you meet that first day makes or breaks you. I am not a socially awkward person, but everyone here at Carthage basically is. Everyone here thinks that they're all that. I warn everyone to not listen to what the tour guides and school tells you. They trick you into attending their college. It isn't as great as it seems. Plus the people in the financial aid office are stupid. I know people who had to leave Carthage a week in because they got a letter saying Carthage took away a grant they gave them and had to pay an extra 8,000 a semester to stay. And this year Carthage enrolled too many students and didn't have enough housing. So, these students had to live in a Best Western off campus. They have to be bused to campus. The hotel is about 10 minutes away from campus. Carthage wants to take your money and is basically a school looking for more people to make more money. Their slogan is "radical hospitality" and will try everything to get you to attend. The school's academics are the worst thing I have ever encountered. The small class sizes are great if you struggled in high school, but the intimate environment can get old after awhile. Plus, the classes are a joke. Everyone skips class all the time because you can never go to class and still perform well. I am a math major and am currently in Calculus 2. Just the other day we took a group test in class. Yes, I did just say a group test, in college. It's great if you are struggling in the class, but the class is ridiculously easy so the professor used this test to help boost people's grades who were struggling. Also, in my chemistry class we spent a month learning sig figs. I suggest that anyone who succeeded in high school and is a somewhat bright student to consider elsewhere. Carthage has worn me down and I would hate to see anyone else attend it and feel the way I do. Everything that I have stated will definitely not be shared with you during your visit.
