I'm in-state, so this applies mostly to other in-staters.

International Stuff…

There are parts of the U that are very helpful - the International Center (headed by Bill Nolting) is the best in the country. Then there's the College of Engineering, which takes the view that any upper level class not at the U must be somehow inferior. They make it extremely difficult to get credits to transfer from study abroad and basically discourage it in general. That's why I get to spend another year here.

They also charged me engineering tuition to study on an LSA program and basically screwed me out of a couple thousand dollars even though I took the same classes as the LSA people. (The LSA people got screwed too - we studied in a country where tuition is $60/semester but still had to pay the regular U of M tuition.) So I guess I got double screwed.

Other tuition complaints…

Also, 75% of AP credits are bullshit if you're an engineer. Most of mine (except physics and math) only served the purpose of pushing me into the upperclassman level of tuition early.

Other than being screwed over several times in the tuition department, I'm happy here. I guess that's partly due to the fact that my parents are paying for this and it's still about half the cost of an out of state school of similar quality.

(I'm putting off my homework now so I'm just gonna rant - don't turn this in to my English teacher)

Why it's worth it…

Because of this University companies are scrambling to pay me filthy amounts of money to do something I love. That's why I wouldn't change my choice of schools if I could go back and do so.

The ugly side of Ann Arbor… and the antidote

Unfortunately, people with filthy amounts of money also send their kids here, so the campus is overrun with arrogant assholes in Land Rovers and Lexuses (Lexi?). I don't have a problem with rich kids (I live with 2 of them), but the arrogant meatheads that seem to overpopulate this place can get tiresome. On a somewhat related I saw a Ferrarri Modena 360 in the Media Union parking lot yesterday. Wow.

If you smile or say hi to some stranger on the street here, they glare at you or look away. Even on weekend nights when everybody's out partying. What the fuck's up with that? You greet a stranger at MSU on a Friday night and you'll probably end up partying with them. Any time I need a dose of friendly people I head up to East Lansing

To sum it all up, Michigan is great for your future career and has a good social scene if you can weed out the assholes.

If you want to save money and want a great social scene and an adequate (but not excellent) education, go to MSU.
