UAB is still trying to make the transition from being a purely commuter school to a more "residential" type of campus. This is a no-kidding urban campus in a busy section of Birmingham, AL. This is good, in that there are clubs, restaurants, etc very conveniently located… yet not so great in that most female students do not feel completely safe, especially at nightI have had some really good teachers in the School of Educ., but have not been as happy with instructors in other areas of study.Another thing to consider is that the university is attached to one of the leading research hospitals on the planet… this is great for those going into the medical field, but the academic side of the place seems to get lost in the shuffle when it comes to prestige, reputation, funding, etc… All in all, I feel that I am getting a good education, but am missing out on the overall traditional college life that the UA campus at Tuscaloosa offers, as well as Auburn and some of the other old line southern universities.
