My greatest disappointment in this college was the lack of knowledge and resources it had (and it seems little has changed) for students' mental health. It is statistically proven that people develop psychological problems or already developing problems peak between the ages of 15 and 25. In addition, psychological problems are exacerbated by stress and at Knox there is A LOT of stress. It seems to me that EVERY college and university in this country should be versed on boundaries, and how to handle a crisis situation. Response to crisis should not always be the "bull-in-a-china-shop" response that is needed in a situation like Virginia Tech. When a student is in crisis, they need help NOW and do not always know how to help themselves. Going to THE campus counselor or a professor is not always the best thing for a student in crisis to do. There needs to be some kind of disability resource center to help advise and stratagize with parents, students and professors BEFORE a crisis happens and certainly after such an ordeal. The tuition of students with mental and physical disabilities is just as high as everyone else, but adequate resources are nonexistent. My advice to parents and students is "enter at your own risk" Galesburg (the town) is just as impotent when it comes to mental health help. So if your son or daughter does not have a car and needs to GO TO PEORIA to be hospitalized in the middle of the night, don't count on anyone associated with Knox helping with transportation. They could be fired, because a Knox student in crisis is a "liability." It seems to me, NOT helping or NOT having resources available is the TRUE liability. The attitude then—instead of "all hands on deck" is "FEND FOR YOURSELF."This is a life and death issue folks. I wouldn't recommend this college until they do a major overhaul and wake up to the very serious college issues that face students today.
