I really don't find this place to be as bad as everyone makes it out to be. This is my third year attending the University of Hartford, and I feel that your experience at the school depends on what you like to do. I don't drink or smoke, but there is a lot of that here if you're into the whole party scene. However, there are activities for those who aren't involved with that such as trips to Manhattan or Boston every once in a while (you can take the Megabus in downtown Hartford for less than 20 dollars), or go to the many parks and malls that the Hartford area has. You have to give it a chance before you know how you truly feel about the place. When I started my first year here I HATED it and wanted to transfer. I had a horrible roommate and didn't know my way around. However, my mother told me to give it a chance so I stayed. After exploring places to go and the ways to get around, I enjoy it here and have met my boyfriend of two years while attending. I actually want to move back to the area when it's time to buy a house.
Depending on what school you go to (there are several schools within the University itself; I am in the Barney School of Business) the education is very good. The professors are always willing to help you during and after classes. The classes are also small so you will remembered by name, not just a number or student in a seat. Unfortunately, about half of the student body attends Hillyer College, which is basically a community college within the University. This is what gives the UHA a bad name. Let's just say that if Hillyer college did not exist, the University of Hartford would actually be second best in education within the state of Connecticut after Yale (And yes, better than UCONN). Also, if you plan to attend the Barney school be proud of the fact that you are in one of the top 10% of business schools in the WORLD. It is also AACSB accredited. On top of this, 98% of graduating students from Barney find a successful career within one year of graduation. This is just to show how reputable some of the colleges within UHA are on an individual scale. Don't associate the good apples with the bad ones, like many do.
Essentially your experience here depends on what you are doing with yourself, just like any experience you have in life. If you find your professor or major not very challenging, find a more difficult one. If they're still not challenging enough, either research more on the subject during your free time or if you really don't like it here then transfer. Do not badmouth the entire university just because you had a bad experience. You are only one person, and thousands of people have attended and graduated this school without a problem. The Vice President of the marketing company that makes all of those Mac vs. Windows commercials graduated from UHA with a business degree. He is obviously successful and did not let the tranquility of Connecticut get to him like most people. If you find it boring you have to remember that college is not just about partying like you see in a lot of movies; it's about growing up, getting an education, and finding yourself. Playtime is over.

This school was an absolute waste of money. I went there for a year, did well, and transferred to a much better school. If you are considering attending this school and even have half a brain, don't. If you go there, do well and transfer because it's well worth the effort. The academics are a joke. A great deal of professors do no even have their doctorate. They are extremely uninspiring. The students are highly unmotivated. They are more concerned with fighting and their blowout haircuts. The campus is downright ugly. The surrounding city provides nothing to do. Avoid this school at all costs. I hope this review benefits at least one person's life by saving them from this embarrassment of an institution.

Took the BSN course of study at the university-was unable to reach my advisor by phone or email for two out of four years at school-had to forge her signature onto registration forms. During our last semester clinical we never saw our clinical advisor at all and we were assigned to work at an inner city homeless shelter. My two partners did not show up for half of the clinicals and I ended up doing all of the work. My complaints fell on deaf ears when I tried to speak to the faculty members in charge of clinical rotations-they just poohpoohed everything I said-and yet those two jokers got to share my grade with me. I approached another faculty member about it, and she stated "Well, see how important communication is...you all need to communicate better with each other" and proceeded afterward to reject the capstone paper that I handed in independently and instead graded one that my colleagues had sent in-essentially a first draft of my paper that I had e-mailed to them-that included all three of our names. This program is going to be under review this coming fall and I hope they get stripped of their accreditation as I am not the only person who has been put through the wringer by these people. In closing I must add that all other classes in all other departments such as the english, math, history, and art departments were excellent, it is just the Nursing Department that is so horrific.
