Tough call here. I was a California kid with no immediate family military experience and had the shock of my life going to the Academy in July 1994. I was bright in High School and got excellent grades, but part of the shock was that EVERYbody at the Academy is bright. It's a tough school, academically, militarily, and emotionally. What kept me in was the network of friends that I'll never lose touch with. I've succeeded beyond my wildest expectations and went from restricted cadet formation to Military Pilot in what seems like the blink of an eye and I've not looked back. Memories, yeah, I've got 'em. Not all fond, but if you truly want the experience of a lifetime, good, bad, and ugly, this is the place for you.

While my undergrad degree had little to do with what I did upon graduation, I expected that before attending. After all, you should attend this school because you want to be a Coast Guard officer, not because you want to be a politician--at least not immediately upon graduation. While there is an underlying climate of arrogance among the student body, that is to be expected when one considers that this school is consistently rated the most selective in the nation. That is not to say that the students are overtly snobbish, and you will make some great friends there and discover that even the "stuck-up" kids are willing to work with you to get the job done.

Overall, a great experience and good choice for your future employment, if you're willing to dedicate your time and energy to make it through!

CGA is not your typical experience. There is a lot of military BS to deal with, but the service itself is great and you will have a guaranteed job after graduation. Did I mention you get PAID to go there. Not much, but it's better than having to pay tuition. Because of all you go through, you will definitely make many friends for life. Graduation from the academy really means a lot, and the President even makes it around every couple of years!

This is a lifestyle not an 8 to 4 job. Unless you are serious about the military don't bother.
