Overall the facility has been supportive and friendly to a non-Chemistry student in their classes. I do believe that the graduate classes can be somewhat harder. In my master's degree in engineering at another state school the classes were harder and the professors did not care about complaints from the students. I think a little tough love will add to the self confidence of the students. For myself I feel very welcome by the professors and the staff, this was not the case in the last two universities that I attended. | | Aug 16 2012 | Chemistry | | |

| | | The program I was in, Human Resource Development, in NIU's College of Education, was a kinder, more-gentle version of the College of Business management program. The NIU faculty bent over backwards to help me through the program with an assistantship, an internship and consistant availability for whatever problem I encountered. I learned a great deal, too, and immediately applied that knowledge to the management position I held at the time. The profs. were outstanding. The information I gained about organizational development is something I still use on a daily basis. Some of the academic politics (typical of everywhere) were the reason I didn't go beyond a masters, but then I am not an academic person and a doctorate was not needed for my field. | | Feb 27 2008 | Education | | MsEd.-non-thesis |

| | | Amidst the arrogant and often bumbling administration there are but few devoted and qualified faculty members. Unfortunatly the faculty members that are on the ball are over worked because the administators do not hire full time tenure track positions. The graduate students have few choices for studio classes because the abundance of professors are adjunct and not allowed to teach at the graduate level. The most dissapointing part about my experience is the tension that is allowed and cultivated by the schools director, no one feels comfortable around this person, and rumors are always in the air. The director usually resorts to bully tactics and does not seem to have any goals in mind for the graduate studio department. There is a division between most departments and the focus of the school has been to place importance on the Art Education Dept. A common name for grad school here is 'highschool' refering to the demeaning attitude of the administrators, and the forcefull tactics of the Director | | Mar 11 2005 | Art & Design Department | | |

| | | Pursuing an MFA in fine Art requires some confidence and understanding that one's degree is not "practical." Having said that, the program was excellent. Hige number of faculty (read lots of choices) and m any are active professionally, and many excellent student/peers. Especially in the Chicago, there is what is known as the "NIU Art Mafia"--so many people in the field and biz that went to NIU (and help each other out). I've been "out for 20+ years and still am in touch--as professionals in the arts--with many people I met at NIU. | | Jan 09 2005 | Art & Design Department | | |

| | | Northern is probably no better nor worse than any other large university. The only reason why I attend Northern is because it offers that which I am looking for at locations that are not too inconvenient | | Feb 16 2004 | Education | | |

| | | If you are honestly committed to working for your degree, this school won't let you down. I am beginning to realize that if you want it, you have to ask for it...and you will usually get it. The people, not just the education, make grad school fun and worthwhile. | | Oct 15 2003 | Communications | | |
