| Quite Bright | I graduated from Colby over 15 years ago. When I left Colby, I was generally satisfied, but had plenty of things I thought I should complain about. Now, my perspective is very different. Colby gave me an outstanding education. In the long run, it was worth every penny. My first job made it clear that I was a better critical thinker then those I worked with; I could solve problems faster and find creative solutions. That was what Colby's English department gave me. | Education Quality: A+, Surrounding City: B+ | | | |

I am currently a freshman girl and I could not be happier with my choice to go to Colby College. The students are friendly, the faculty is accessible and genuinely wants to help you, and even though it's located in Waterville, Maine, there always is something to do. There can be some awkward moments around campus since it's so small, but I find that it's the perfect size for me. It's small enough so I know generally a fair amount of people on campus but big enough that I'm meeting new people on a weekly basis.
There is a lot of drinking on campus, but if you're chem free, the student programming board always tries to have fun activities on the weekends. Colby students work hard but they also play hard. However, unlike state universities, you don't really find the majority of Colby students drinking on the weekdays. The party scene gets a little old since it's a bunch of people squeezing in a small dorm room, but there are a few parties off campus and in the apartments which are super fun.
Colby's a competitive school academic wise but it still maintains a community feel. Study groups are really popular among students, which shows that students are willing to help each other succeed. Classes are a hit or miss depending on the professor. Some classes are really intellectually stimulating and others are easy with bad professors but I suspect that this may be the same at all colleges.
Athletics are really popular at Colby. Athletic teams tend to stick together in terms of social life but it's not necessary to be in one. I'm not on a team and I found that it was still easy to make friends. Colby's a really friendly campus and it's what you make of it.
A con about Colby is the lack of diversity. I know this is something the admissions office has been trying hard to fix but right now, the campus is really homogeneous. White, upper middle class, and from New England. A lot of the students of color stick together but that does not mean the majority of students are not accepting. Again, it's what you make of it. If you do decide to enroll at Colby, bring a car! It's really useful to have to get into town and go home. Airfares are usually cheap but a cab to the airport is astronomical! Around $150. Get a car, trust me. Overall, my experience at Colby has been a fantastic one. I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a small liberal arts college. | Faculty Accessibility: A+, Surrounding City: C- | | | |

| Quite Bright | I am a third year music major, and am not from the greater Boston area. Despite this geographic flaw in my character, I have found this to be the perfect place for me to be. I love the outdoors and the kids here. The faculty in general are very approachable and helpful. The administration can be inflexible at times, but in general issues get worked out. kids here like to drink and ski, but also discuss poetry and argue politics. it is a 'liberal' liberal arts school, but people are tollerant | Faculty Accessibility: A+, Surrounding City: C- | | | |

| Quite Bright | I am a first year student at Colby and love the college. I have found it to be as advertised, with excellent academics and faculty who really care about teaching and about their students. The small school atmosphere works for me, since it creates an environment where it's pretty easy to meet people with different majors and interests. Even though Waterville is a small city without a great deal to offer, there is always plenty to do on campus, including parties, concerts, athletic events, speakers etc. For me the small school has also worked well since I've been able to participate on a varsity team, which wouldn't have happened at a Division 1 school (I wouldn't have wanted to do it at that level even if I made the team, since it takes too much away from academic and social life). Some of my friends here are on two or more varsity teams and the coaches are fine with that--most also study abroad and again, the coaches expect it. They actually mean it when they say academics come first and although all my coaches in high school said that, none ever really meant it before. It did take me awhile to love Colby as much as I do now. First semester I felt a little lost and felt the isolation of the location more keenly, but I don't think first semester would have been easy anywhere. Now I see the location and tight-knit atmosphere of a small LAC as a gift. I come from the suburbs of a large city and will probably spend most of my life, including grad school, in cities or suburbs. You can only be at a place like this once in your life and I wouldn't trade the experience. | Faculty Accessibility: A, Surrounding City: C+ | | | |
