As a Data Science International student, I highlyFeb 15 2018Other
As a Data Science International student, I highly recommend don't come here. Data Science courses are not flexible. Data science is not a department. You can't even talk to your director Timothy Heavens to discuss because he never replies for mails. And the most important thing, you can't go for fall co-op in data science like other specialization people. In that case, you have to complete your degree in 2.5 years which is worst. No funding even if u r performing good. Don't come here international students, there are many universities that gives you course flexibility and you can also go for a coop by parallely completing your degree within 2 years.
Funding is almost nonexistentNov 25 2015Chemical Engineering
Funding is almost nonexistent. There appears to be an expectation that you will pay for your first year, and possibly then some. That is if you get a TA or RA position - roughly half of my class originally hoped to complete a PhD, but dropped to a Master's. Funding was cited as a primary concern by most. I have witnessed several students have their funding reduced or cut entirely, despite producing publications and making progress on their thesis/dissertation. In each instance, the professors indicated a lack of available funding. I additionally knew of a student working a part-time job doing non-scientific work in order to make ends meet, which is completely unheard of at other schools. Furthermore, several of the professors appear overworked due to lack of TAs, and several graduate students served as TAs without tuition reimbursement (that was effectively their funding). Why the department is so stingy despite appearing to have the same income as departments at other universities, I have no idea. The undergraduate program is actually quite excellent. But for graduate school, just don't go here. If you do not get in anywhere besides MTU for graduate school, you should consider an alternative, such as waiting a year to reapply to other schools, or seeking a position in industry.
I got a Masters degree in "Rhetoric andDec 29 2014Unknown
I got a Masters degree in "Rhetoric and Technical Communication" that is absolutely useless. The graduate program is now called "Rhetoric, Theory, and Culture" and why anyone would want to get a degree in something like that is beyond me. The department used to be extremely well respected but the star faculty were driven away and the ones who replaced them are not known. The worst thing is just how incredibly useless the classes are. I did not learn a single thing of value and just wrote about theories that the professors think are so important. They are now bringing in international students to fill the classes because not enough Americans are applying.
Dont come, faculty areDec 23 2014Electrical Engineering
Dont come, faculty are not only below standard, they are not co operative, just dont care, no funding at all, sheer wastage of money, few on campus jobs, freezing cold, worst place on earth, expensive housing
Really, really, really hate this place, but sinceJan 15 2014Natural Resources
Really, really, really hate this place, but since I am in a program now I can't leave without massive retribution from my adviser. Basically if you leave a program once you start, your damaged goods in the academic community. Choose wisely and don't come up here, always thought hell was a hot place, but now I know its an ice cube called Michigan Tech. Pretty much everything about this place is awful from the town to the University. If you want to study NRM please don't make the same mistake I did, go to CSU, OSU, MSU, UMinn there are just so many better options where you can work with faculty who do consequential research. This place is almost fully staffed by assistant professors because everyone leaves after a year or two, every spring there is a mass exodus of faculty, its sad, no program continuity. Finally I am not a smart person, I'll admit it, but I go here on a full ride, so this place is not elite, yet the students will make you think they attend the greatest school in the world. Everyone walks around starring at the ceiling, but its just how high they hold their noses up. This place is truly toxic, stay away or be forever sullied.
This place is unbelievableNov 30 2011Biology
This place is unbelievable. You can learn a bit of science when you come here, but for most people you will most likely get more ignorant. The people are so bored that the politics are out of control. No collaboration, the people are too insecure and immature to work together. If you don't kiss butt and are an honest person do not come to Tech. You will lose yourself here. Cant wait to leave. I would almost rather not get a degree at all than to get one here. For a technological university, they need to step up to the plate heavily and address the concerns of trying to be more green like other schools. This school is a pathetic waste of beautiful nature. The students complain about the easiest tests on earth. Dance club and "booze club" are more important than working hard in classes. It is so tiresome hearing about how tough Yoopers are, and how much they can drink. The natives are rude, nothing runs efficiently. My apartment is filled with cigarette smoke nightly, and the affordable options are scarce.Actually I don't think I could go on enough to express the depth of my dislike.
