Going to SVSU hasn't held me back in any way at all. You can only get as much out of an experience as you put into it, and I think a large part of the "nothing to do" problem is people not putting any effort into it. It's not hard to find things to do. There are many campus organizations that offer a lot of activities. There are several annual events that are very large (Battle of the Valleys, Relay for Life, etc.). In short, SVSU has not held me back in any way (academically OR socially).

SVSU is bad for forcing students to spend multiple years doing general ed classes and when they finally get around to teaching you the skills you are paying the college for, you find the classes are nothing like what you've been led to believe they would be. The school is focused on getting money from students not actually training them for the real world. The amount of not relevant classes forced on students is borderline immoral

Saginaw Valley tries to get you to come because of the new dorms. It is bull. You have no freedom more than 4 people in your room you will have the police at your door. This is a commuter college which I didn't know and if you live on campus everyone goes home on the weekends because it is so boring and campus police is so strict. We went to a party off-campus even and the police followed us there. So don't intend on drinking in college even if you are 21 because they make you get a permit for that and limit how much you can drink! Teachers are nice but everyone goes to class and doesn't talk, it is really hard to make friends. Save your money go to community college and go to a better university.
