Positive Negative Neutral Advice
First off let me say that I thinkQuite BrightComputer Science
First off let me say that I think I got a very good education at bju. We were required to attend all classes which in retrospect helped me since I was very undisiplined at the time and probably would've miss a lot of class. I was able to get into grad school, but not the ones I wanted to go to. If I didn't go to grad school I think I would've had a much harder time finding a job and wouldn't be as successful.

For me the biggest negative is the all the insane rules. I was always afraid of getting "shipped" even though I was a basically good kid. I grew up in a strict home, so at the time the rules didn't seem much different from home. But I now realize how harmful it was in many ways. College is a time to start deciding for yourself what's right & wrong, to make some mistakes and learn from them. When right & wrong is dictated to you, you don't know why you believe what you do since it's someone elses belief system. Once you graduate and are "free" many will swing completely the opposite way. This seems especially true of dating couples since while on campus that can't even hold hands or talk after 7pm without going to the "dating parlor". This pent-up sexual frustration causes them to go much farther once they are finally off campus. I know many who started drinking after graduation not so much because they wanted to but because they finally could.

I am a Christian and I probably have more Biblical knowledge than many Christians since I was required to take a Bible class every semester. Does that make me a better Christian - in my case No. It wasn't till after college that I met geniune Christians that struggled with their beliefs, made mistakes, and strived to learn more on their own rather than learning it for a test.So would I recommend bju to anyone? For some - yes, but for most - no. Yes, for those going into the Ministry. Yes, for strong Christians who won't go wild once "free" (although one could argue that such a person would be even stronger in a secular setting). No, for those trying to get into Med or Law school or almost any other top-notch grad school. If you can ignore the rules and the social aspect then you can get a very solid education for much less money than it would cost at an equivalent secular school. I've heard it called the "Yale of Christian colleges" - too bad it also has such significant downsides.

Question
During my time at BJU, I received anAccounting
During my time at BJU, I received an excellent, well-rounded education in accounting. Professors demonstrated a loving and helpful spirit in all my dealings with them. I graduated in 1984 and immediately had several offers from the largest accounting firms in several cities. Years later when I applied for grad school, I was accepted by 4 out of 5 that I applied to into a PhD program (all of which were in the top or second "tier" of accounting programs in the nation). Lack of accreditation for BJU was never an issue with any of my employers or with any of the grad schools. I suspect that those who have trouble getting into grad schools or have trouble getting jobs either didn't have high enough scores on standardized tests or failed to get acceptable letters of reference. Add in such variables as the economy, in-state preferences, and communication skills, and there are many reasons that a potential graduate student might get rejected by a grad program at a "state" school other than because of a lack of accreditation.

Question
When I asked my faculty advisor about gradQuite BrightOther
When I asked my faculty advisor about grad school, she lit up...until I clarified that I was interested in NYU or UCLA. Then nothing. Prior to that I was "a part of the department team", after that I was practically ignored. I was denied post-grad job assistance. The lack of accredidation has sorely hurt me in many, many ways. I had to move into technology to get a good paying job, completely unrelated to any course work I took at BJU. I have hit the glass ceiling and am now stuck. My manager suggested I go for the MBA. Every single accredited University has told me I will need to redo my bachelors completely. The fact that my major is not even listed and that we have to choose "other" shows that BJU is ashamed of the Cinema Department. Even though the global hands-on filmmaking experiences & training surpassed the departmentalized format of union-based UCLA, NYU, & USC film schools, it lacks a real-world perspective that creative people must be able to get a real job to pay their bills. Those film jobs are through the unions and the people I've met & worked with there are NO different than the people I've worked with in corportate environments. Here's a news flash for BJU: there ARE Christians who live and work in Hollywood. Just as many as there are in any other business: a small percentage. If BJU still labels Hollywood as "an evil to be avoided" then BJU, with it's cinema training resources, is partly responsible for the void of Christian filmmakers in the system.
