As a dual-enrollment student, I'm not as acquaintedQuite BrightPhysics
As a dual-enrollment student, I'm not as acquainted with UTC as your typical alumnus. Nevertheless, I have been taking classes at the University part time for the past two years and have become reasonably familiar with the atmosphere and academic quality.

The bad:
UTC is a commuter school, first of all, so don't expect an extraordinary amount of diversity.
The academics are mediocre in the math, physics, and foreign language departments (the only departments in which I have taken classes - I don't know about the others). Mostly the students are taught the "plug-and-chug" methods to math and physics. The one professor of German at the entire university is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. He babies his students. In fact, babying is common in every class I have taken. "Okay class, pencils down. Put everything under your desks."

Often I feel like I'm at high school all over again. If you look at the course schedule for any given semester, you can see that about half of the math classes are remedial high school courses.

The good:
Professors and students are nice people.
Summary:
Only attend this school if you must, especially if you're looking for any sort of academic experience or even just something above high school level coursework.

Question
My experience at UTC was one of theMath
My experience at UTC was one of the most unique that I ever had.
First, let me say that this was NOT my first choice for a college. I had applied to Vanderbilt and was accepted (as well as on full scholarship). Unfortunately, because of sever personal family problems, I was not able to go there. In fact, if I wanted to go to college UTC was the only remaining choice. And so, I did.

My first year was pretty miserable as I was NOT happy and very bitter. But, one way or the other, I did OK. I had planned to major in math at Vanderbilt and that was the major I chose at UTC. The 1st year math courses were so so. Not good, not bad. Just crank and grind thru them. Had some good courses in history amd English though.

And then my life changed with the 2nd year. That year I took calculus and my professor was without a doubt one of the best teachers I have ever met. Prof Massey was absolutely outstanding. And also very hard. I had him for 3 more advanced course jr and sr year and he was even better. And he was even more difficult. I simply can not say enough about this person. Becuase of him I found my life's work and have been very happy doing mathematical research. As a result I completely forgot about Vanderbilt and over the years am very thankful that I had the opportunity to go to UTC and to meet someone like Massey.

Question
UTC is a good school.BrightPolitical Science
UTC is a good school. It has excellent dorms (apartment style). How many schools can say that? The social life is what you make out of it. You can have either a great or awful experience. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a commuter school. It's a great choice for Tennessee high school students, although I don't know if I'd recommend it for people who have to pay out-of-state tuition.
