The academic atmosphere is very lax.BrightBusiness - Management and Administration
The academic atmosphere is very lax. especially for the freshman gen ed classes, you have to try to be lazy to not do well. Teachers don't expect much from those classes. They do get a little harder as you go up, but if you show an effort to learn, you should pass. Business is a good major and most people major in it. Art has nothing, don't waste your time. They also have a good engineering dept, but most of those students and teachers are middle eastern. ODU has one of the largest NROTC (Navy reserve officer Training Corps) units in the US (most of them are pior enlisted) If you're interested in that, it's a pretty relaxed atmosphere with lots of opportunites to hold a leadership position. (If you want scholarship, get good grades, good PT scores, and talk to people. You'll probably get it.)

ODU has no culture. There is no defining group or activity that brings the students together. We have a damn good men's soccer team and a good number of people do go, but it's not something the entire campus gets excited about. ( think there's tryign to get a football team togther in 2010?) Campus cops will bust underage drinkers if they can. Norfolk cops will shut the party down if it gets too loud, but they usually don't turn anyone in. The school is surrounded on 1 side by the ghetto and the street smells like garbage and on the other side are the nice ritzy houses. There's a lot of diversity, but people tend to hang out with those similar to them. The teachers are diverse too: if you can't pronouce their last name, chances are they have a very VERY thick accent. Good luck understanding that class... Any campus music events are usually hip/hop. (but the Norva downtown usually has a good rock show every few weeks.) And don't let the Maglev fool you---a new "solution" to fix it has come up several times... and the final date it'll be fixed keeps getting pushed further back.

Norfolk is a very haphazard city; you'll have ghetto here, really nice apt complex there. Virginia Beach is 30 min away. Waterside (downtown) is good place to go as well as the McArthur Mall (3 stories). and DON'T travel through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel during rush hour. Sometimes it can take 1 hour to get across those 3 miles.

BEWARE ODU BUSINESS PRACTICES!!! I was charged a 'late fee' of nearly $100 (yes, one hundred dollars) due to a SERIES of ADMINISTRATIVE MISTAKES. When I contacted billing, the individual I had to deal with did not return my calls and rudely interrupted me repeatedly when I finally managed to contact her-- I actually had to be rude in return before she'd even pretend to listen to me. They refused to remove the fee and I was forced to pay it, even though it was THEIR mistakes that led to the fee. Even contacting the university president was ineffective. With only a few courses left in my degree, it's unfortunately too late for me to transfer, otherwise I'd already be in a different school.

Question
Old Dominion is a good school to goBrightOther
Old Dominion is a good school to go to if you're from Virginia. Otherwise, good luck fitting in and finding anyone else from your state. I would say almost 85+% of the people at ODU live on average only an hour away from campus. Maybe it was just because it was my freshman year, but people also seemed pretty imature there. Dorm life was intense. Almost everyone on my floor would party on week nights, and in the moring the hallways would be a mess and ONE cleaning lady would have to clean it all up. People would play messy pranks on their friends too, and never clean it up themselves. One person even BARFED on the laundry room door and didn't clean it off so the hallway reeked for days. People were just really inconsiderate, yelling and running up and down the hallways at 3am. On the weekedns you'd have to keep your door locked so that drunk people dont wander in while you're sleep. Plus lots of people had stuff stolen. Also, if you don't want to party all the time, there is nothing to do in Norfolk. ODU is basically a commuter school and most of the people that I met were commuters so they obviously weren't on campus on the weekends, so nothings going on except parties with really immature irresponsible people. I guess in summary, Go to ODU in you're from VA, and like to party, otherwise find another school. I left after 1st semster, because based on what I had seen, and the education I was getting, out of state tuition was NOT WORTH IT.
