Beloit College

I went to Beloit for two years and had very mixed feelings about the place. First of all I will say that the academics here are pretty good. The best part about them are the fact that the classes are small and you can make an impact in whatever field you are working with. Best departments include geology, anthropology, english and music.

The student body and the surrounding town is the biggest problem here. First of all, Beloit is a podunk wasteland with absolutely nothing to do anywhere. Ask anybody that lives there and they'll say the only reason the town even survives is because of the college. There are a couple of bars downtown but the people that go there are absorbed in their own social cliques, which there are a lot of. For a school so small, you'd think that more people would be friends with eachother and hang out with everybody but that is simply not the case. Not that people are unfriendly, they are just socially retarded. Most of the people that come here were losers in high school and are busy pretending that they weren't. Not to mention the ridiculous science fiction contingent that permeates the student body. BSFFA (Beloit Science Fiction Fantasy Association) contains some of the biggest nerds, dorks, and socially inept people that I could ever imagine having existed. The students, overall, are frumpy liberals, thinking that they are making a stand by wearing skirts in mid-January and jeans with holes purposely cut into them, but they are really just as apathetic as everyone else. For a group of people who claim to be such open-minded people who have goals on how to change the world, nobody really does anything. There is a severe apathy in the political life on campus for such a liberal school. In short, unless you are a frumpy liberal that pretends to be a hippie but really isn't because you wear designer clothes and like to drink a lot, you should go somewhere else. Peace.

I came here with a very open minded, wonderful attitude about my college experience, and Beloit has squashed my spirit, in so many words. The classes are either remedial or impossible, and although the school boasts that 50% of its students go abroad, the red tape to complete the process is truly unbelievable. To get right down to the nitty gritty, there is nothing to do, everyone is homogeniously liberal, and the whole place has a clear sense of being VERY disorganized.
