Furman's campus is beautiful with its numerous fountains, lake, swans, and landscaping. The challenging and extensive academic curriculum is tempered with extracurricular opportunities such as internships, study abroad, volunteering, organizational involvement, and intense sporting events (NCAA Division 1-AA). The unusual trimester system makes it easy to study abroad and finish those med school requirements before you take the MCAT Junior year. Because "Engaged Learning" is the motto here at Furman, there are lots of opportunities to get hands on experience and the funds to support them. However, if you are looking for great racial or religious diversity, you might want to look elsewhere. Furman, though no longer affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, identifies 24% of its students as Baptist. There are also fewer than 300 international and minority students on campus (out of 2600). While students are willing to learn and are pretty much accepting, most students identify themselves as having a Protestant, conservative background. Overall, my Furman experience has been an eye-opener and I do not regret as a minority student for one minute making the decision to come here.
