I got ripped off so bad it is not funny. $150,000 later I expected far more. The sad part is the education is not bad at all. Many professors are approachable and interested in student ideas but they to are part of a bueracracy that took what was once a proud beacon of liberal education and turned it in to a business we are ironically taught to fight. On an intellectual level I am much better off than four years ago, as for my general state of mind, that took a worse beating than the old bank account. The bottom line is that college is more than just the education, the housing is among the worst primarily becasue the administrators have all been fired, replaced or left and the facilities themeselves are antiquated, overpirced and in short supplly. Brandeis takes in over $5 million for housing yet spends less than 1/2 that on facilities somethings wrong here. The food service is Aramark, the worlds largest supplier, yet on a college campus the prices are so obscence it is MUCH cheaper to dine and purchase general items off-campus at retail stores. The same holds true for the book store, Barnes and Noble run the outfit yet the return/buyback policy is a sham and the prices outrageous. At present we have a new ugly CAMPUS CENTER, thats right, a campus center, not a STUDENT center. A student center is for students, a campus center is one big tangible ego trip for an older couple that could have put that money to great use. The "president" Jehudah Reinhartz is no saint himself. The bottom line is the only concern, somehow a $25+ million building that houses more office staff and wasted space than viable general student concerns was more important than the housing and classroom updates (especially in the humanities) we so desperately need. The gym is rarely open for general students, it is occupird by classes and teams until 4PM, sometimes later and is only open until 8 on Fri and 6 on the weekends with some of those hours being devoted to certain clubs or even worse being rented out to off-campus groups. Any other on campus activities do not compare to the other major campuses in the general Boston area with the exception of our one concert a year that usually draws a good act. That said whenever something is going on here we get overrun by members of the outside community which is fine by me but unfortunate in the sense that our own students are so apathetic that they are a minority at their own events. The student body is diverse but at the same time seperated in the sense that many groups tend to stick together. The lack of on-campus events that appeal to a mass audience conributes greatly to this. Somehow our tolerance and acceptance of all groups has somewhat backfired. With every group doing there "own thing" groups tend to stick together. I actually think the students here are above that, perhaps if every event wasn't club related, or sanctioned or with an overbearing cultural/religious overtone there would be a greater interest. If the student center actually existed and offered evening activites i.e.a NORMAL game room perhaps more people would be there. Academics are obviously the most important part of ones college experience and I still maintain that Brandeis offers a quality education. The only hang-up is the administration, the bursars office, the majority of the deans and program heads are completly useless and ambivalent when it comes to students concerns. Unless you are extremely wealthy (I am by no means poor but too idealistic to attempt some of the stunts that have proported to exist on this campus)have parents who will moan on your behalf or willing to fight tooth and nail for general entitlements you will be screwed over. This is true of everything, especially the housing seslection process which is revised every year because of it's inefficiency but moreso because it is circumvented through various artificial means on a regular basis, but also class selection, to advisor, to access to staff and services and even in the case of some general entitlements. On a higher level the treatment of lower-level employes is sub-standard. Without including specifics, I really do feel for some of the staff here. Finally, I do not want to end on such a sour note. My situation was unique as I am very idealistic and expected a lot more. Some of the more influential administrators during my tenure were so incompetent that the after-effects were almost insurmountable and this affected my whole experience. Brandeis has a lot of potential, the president and major personel need to be removed, immediately. Brandeis has a history that is being forskaen. Student activism has become marginalized in to a specific format that is hard to enter or understand. At a university where justice and tolerance is the motus apperende there should be more willingness to do more than get trashed and compalin about insignificant issues like the food. Brandeis, with some new housing and administrative personel could return to glory but the change needs to be internal.
Responses
responseThank you for realizing this, I do not feel alone anymore. I am leaving because nothing has changed besides the faces, the staff mistreatment, the administrative decay, the crappy food/facility conditions, the apathetic ignorant savants, and so much we could talk forever. If you get this, please respond, I would love to have a conversation if you are interested. Thanks again.
