It's a nice place, most of the time. Stupid screaming drunken people get kind of annoying but they aren't quite as common as you would think. The campus is quite nice and maintained well, however the campus pond sometimes looks less than desirable. The courses are usually pretty good, but make sure you evaluate the course during add/drop if you're not sure if you want to take it. Before deciding to attend make sure you're prepared to deal with an administration that must be hiding in a bunker somewhere far away, as well as some loud nights, but UMass is a great school overall.
