Alverno College is definitely NOT a school for everyone. Its demographic is different from what you would find at most public universities (i.e. - a lot of the student body is older than traditional college age). Alverno is wonderful in that it gives people who wouldn't normally get into college an opportunity to learn. At Alverno, you have to do/be certain things to succeed. 1. You have to be willing to work hard/try. There is a lot of opportunity to put off work and not even attempt. But, if you do, you're only screwing up YOUR education.2. You have to have an open mind when it comes to different learning environments. There are no grades at Alverno - all the curriculum is assessment-based. This does NOT mean Alverno is easy, and some adjustment must be made. What it DOES mean is that you are in educational competition with only one person…yourself. You have to challenge yourself to learn.3. You have to take initiative. This kind of ties into #2. You have to be willing to do your homework and assessments, and go that extra mile…even when classmates do not. You have to take the responsibility for your learning, whether that means spending 6 hours in the library or calling/e-mailing your instructor on a Saturday afternoon. Alverno makes YOU responsible for YOUR learning and no one else's.4. You have to have an open mind. You will do a lot of self-assessing here…taking a good, hard look at yourself in the mirror. You will learn to identify your strengths/weaknesses and improve on both of them. You will also have to learn to take criticism (constructive, mind you) from faculty and peers. If you have the will to learn and try new things, Alverno is for you. Yes, the tuition's a bit high and the campus is small…but your boundaries and perceptions will be shaped and challenged in ways you never though possible if you go here. I know that when I walk out the doors this December, degree in hand, I will be a completely different person than I was in 2001 when I started.
