I have an unusual vantage point in that I was a transfer student to Tufts my junior year. Before that, I spent my freshman year in the liberal arts department at a well- respected, large state university, and my sophomore year, in the honors college of that same state university.

I wanted to go "up east" and I was accepted into Tufts. It was a huge difference in price. To be honest, I received as good, or better, education in the honors college of the state university. Tufts gave me no connections to use in later life that put me at an advantage. However, I really did enjoy being in a different part of the country, and made some nice friends. Tufts was also a pretty sheltered environment at the time, which was nice.

I would advise anyone who feels they can't afford Tufts or another private school to seriously consider applying to the honors college of their state university. An honors college gives you a "private school" education at a rock bottom price. Unless you are very wealthy, if you have to stretch financially to pay for a school like Tufts, you may feel out of place in certain ways, as a lot of the StudentsReviews indicate. At an honors college at a state university, you'll find a whole lot of bright, motivated kids from middle-class families.
