Im an international affairs major who is going into his 3rd year at GW. I would say that GW is a good school because if you are motivated and driven you can find anything. That is, there are a lot of great classes to take and a great deal of professors really know their stuff. The school is not as academically challenging as I thought it would be, but I have still learned a great deal here. There are a lot of snooty people here, but there are also very cool, smart, and funny people to party with. There are many different groups of people ethnically speaking, but I honestly find that a lot of groups are
somewhat self-segregating
That mean there is are great oppurtunities to mean other people, but many simply stick to their own ethnic group. There tons of exceptions though. GW is definitely not the way it is advertised. I know a lot of people think they know that, but do not really realize what that means. It means that there are a great deal of things to do here, but if you arent driven your not really going to do anything. If you really feel like you are not going to take advantage of the city, etc., then dont pay a ton of extra money to go to school in DC.

There are also a number of things I do not like about GW. The administration makes a lot of decision clearly with financial concerns in mind, but tries to play off the decisions by stating it is for the academic good of the community. Example: the study abroad policy was changed from over 3000 study abroad options and paying outside fees that were very cheap ($4000-8000) to paying GW rates and limiting study abroad options to only a few different "GW approved" places. This is a clear money driven move that was played off as being for the good of students.

If you are thinking about GW and want to party hard in the dorms, it is possible, but not what you think it is. The average GW party on campus is very small and usually just preparation for a bigger and real party off campus. Do not be surprised if you find yourself as a freshmen drinking out of one bottle of Vodka with 6 other people in your room just to go out to a house party. Generally, as you move up at GW, your chance of having a good party in your room grow. Loud parties will not be tolerated and you will be busted. The UPD (University Police Department) regularly send people to the GW hospital for alcohol consumption, who maybe had 2-3 beers.

Although GW boast having frats and sororities, most of the frats are on probation and cant really do anything anyway. For a lot of frats, getting in trouble one more time basically means they will get kicked off campus. A for "Townhouse Row" (Greek houses owned and operated by GW), the UPD can enter these houses and do their routine "sweeps", this means it is very hard to have a party in this "Row."

With all that being said about partying at GW (I really could go on and on) there is hope. There a ton of off campus parties that are a lot of fun. Students have places all over DC and NOVA (Northern VA) where there tons of great parties. There are only two things about these parties: 1)as a freshmen you need to meet upperclassmen to find out and get invited to these (aka you will find yourself pregaming in a dorm room then going out your first year) 2)if you have to much to drink you have to worry about getting back to your room alright. If you leave a party and have had a bit too much, you might be arrested by MPD and go the jail for the night, get picked up by UPD and sent to GW hospital, might get stopped by a security guard while entering your building, or finally, you might get stopped by a CF (name of RAs at GW) before you make it from the stairwell to your room. It sounds like a lot, but the reality is that 95% of the time you will make it home just fine.
