Major: Sociology (This Major's Salary over time)
Your time at college is what you make of it, and with a school as big as UB it is easy to get lost and left behind. Course happiness is based more on who is on faculty at the time, I double majored in Psychology and Sociology and the experiences I had in both differed like night and day. The Soc dept staff are approachable and seem to genuinly enjoy teaching. Too many of my Psy profs seemed more interested in the research money and too many grad students make up the teaching staff. Just about the worst experience I had was when my sophmore year I missed a clinical psychology test due to food poisening that put me in the ER. The prof gave me a 0, and when I went to challenge his actions to my psy advisor she told me that I would have to take it in front of a review board in the dept and implied that I would never win against him. I missed a soc101 test that day also, and rather than punish me for being in the hospitol, professor Blair gave me 2 weeks to recover and allowed me to take an alternate exam which I got an A on. As for clinical psychology, I wound up having to retake the course as we were graded on three multiple choice exams and I had a 0 in one of them. If you want a good psy prof, take Dr. Pelham. I got more out of his Abnormal Child psy. class than out of the entire major, although he will make you work in his class. As for housing, it's crappy and overpriced. I would look into living off campus. Most of the apartments were built in two month periods and are already falling apart, though they try to hide it.The education is good.
