Decades ago in the Vietnam era when I went to Brandeis (BA '72, MA '74 also Sociology from Brandeis), it was a wonderful hotbed of political activism……marches on Washington, student strikes, building takeovers…as well as quite a bit of drugs and sex and, of course, challenging academics.

The sociology department was fantastic, with many caring profs who led classes directly dealing with group process, peer counseling training, and meditation as well as left wing analyses of social systems. I was honored to be mentored by Morrie Schwartz, Maury Stein, and Larry Rosenberg.

The specifics of my education in no way prepared me for the working world. However, the combination of leftist analysis and personal inner work contributed greatly to my having the confidence to take on a variety of careers in adult education and counseling through my continuing self-education, even though I did not always have the right "credentials". Life has certainly been interesting!

I know that students are much more concerned with direct career prep now. However, if you take the opportunity to do some serious inner work also, I believe it will serve you both now and in the long run.
