Everything I have been reading so far in these posts, both pro and con, are accurate.

1. There is a lot of students that should not be in this university. I worked in a program there that helped out students who had a low ACT score such as myself. I received a 17 on my ACT score so SIU would not accept me before I joined the Navy. However, four years later and just out of the military, SIUC did accept me because I was a military vet. State schools here will accept military vets because they know we have responsibility and we are disciplined. It is a great benefit. So I am proud to say that I am part of the 17 percent that graduated from SIU in four years. However, when I worked in that program, I was very upset about the students that were being accepted. I hate using the race card here, but african-Americans (not africans because like all international students, they are intelligent wheter you like it or not) were accepted with ACT scores lower than mine and just out of high school. Many did not do that much in high school or came on just because of football or basketball. Many were felons…etc. I was very upset about this, but I kept this to myself. It is not fair. A responsible male who is white who got decent grades in high school but received a low ACT score should be accpeted to SIU then a black male who is a major trouble maker with that same ACT scores. African-Americans WERE given prefrence than white males. And these white males include white males who grew up in low income neighborhoods such as myself. The sad fact is that I heard only 9 percent of african-americans who come to the school actually graduate. They all live at the university park dorms (Mae Smith and Schneider along with the other small ones). And then there is always violence going on. I lived in Neely which was a great hall for 21 years of age and over. I had a lot of african-american friends (I am not racist, I just don't think this is fair) who did not come back the next year because they did not get the grades. In some ways, I could see how affirmative action can work, but it really doesn't. Listen…don't think I am racist, but I do believe NAACP,KKK,Black Panthers are all racist equally. We have a lot of quality white males and females from lower income neighborhoods who are really getting shafted. SIU basically says if your black, no matter what your background is, your in. And its wrong. And many African-Americans at the university was upset that many whites tried to seperate themselves from blacks. But as I mentioned before, the criteria for African-Americans to come in is so low that you should of seen some of these African-Americans coming in. I have a story to tell…when I was a freshman, we had a situation with a black male who really I would not consider a quality college student. He was really drunk. I had a friend (who was black…like I said…I am open minded) with me and we wanted to just talk to the guy because we just got back partying somewhere and he was hanging out with some of our floormates. He started saying so many racist things about whites, he was about to swing his 40 ounce of malt liquor at me and we had to restrain him. He did not come back the next year because of grades. So, do the whites want to hang out with blacks like that? Another case…I was working at Carboz when it use to be Carboz. We tried to diverse it, but whenever we had the African-American students come in there, there was always a fight or some violence. A couple had knives. One actually started swinging his 40 ounce bottle (another 40 ounce) at other people THAT HE SNUCK IN!! So my owner had enough and she started to switch to non-rap music on Wednesdays because that was when most of the African-Americans came in. We were losing business because no other ethnic group wanted to come in when when we were playing rap and there was a large amount of african-americans. And may I add African-Americans did not tip at all. Next thing you know the whole black community thought it was racist that we did not play rap music…but all they ever did was bring more cops over and scare everyone away. I hung out with many African-Americans and I know they try, and I do respect the African0-American vets, but the fact is that they do get violent when drunk and we saw the cops very much at Carboz because of them. I do admit though, the African-American fraternities were pretty cool and tried to do a lot to improve their image. But really hurt them was their really low GPA scores; however, the black fraternities and sororities did teach them discipline.

2. Despite of this, I do like the diversity of SIU. Most are from the Chicago area and it is not that expensive. When I went there, I believe it was the second cheapest in the state. The state paid for mine with the Illinois Veterans Grant, so the state is awesome. Many did not like the greek system. Many were low income and yes there are many hippies there. I had no problem with hippies and greeks. I hung out with both. In matter of fact, I am an alumni from the greek system. But I did not have "nose up in the air" stereotype that most viewed the greek system as. Usually, the students who were in the greek system did come from a family with a lot of money that just went down to SIU over U of I to party or did not make the cut to get into U of I. I had a great time socially with everyone, no matter their race and background. They had something for everyone there. A lot of Polish from Chicago (who are from Poland originally) are coming down there now and a lot of Greeks (the ethnic Greeks, not the fraternities and sororities). Many hipanics too. I loved getting drunk with everyone of them.

3. There are GREAT programs at SIU are aviation, broadcasting, and teaching. Don't go there for engineering. You go to U of I, or UIC for engineering if you are looking to get into state public schools

4. You learn a lot from Carbondale. It is like the twilight zone when I was there. It is a strange city. It was a good experience for me and I tried living there after school, but I had to get out of there and I did. It is not Champaign, Macomb, or Peoria. It was a different planet. As my friends and I always said…"only in Carbondale."

5. However…if I had to choose all over again…I would of gone to U of I and majored in something else.

Funny how you used a website about university perfomance to rant your inner racist feelings. It's funny how you are so quick to say that black people are this and black people are that. And just so people dont realize youre a racist you throw in that little sorry a** "oh but I have black friends" and they try, But yet you spent 2 pages focusing on the negatives of the race..forget about the positive. You focused on the negative b/c that's all you care about and that's all you will ever see in a black person; whether youre "claiming friendship" with them or not. Question: Do your so-called black friends know how you really feel about them? There's negatives and positives about every race dear…think about that. B/c whether you know it or not you are a racist in denial.

I was a student at SIU during the sixties. As I look back at my time at SIU,I've learned to appreciate my experiences more each day. True some African students as well as White students ACT scores might have been a 17 but the majority of the AA students scored above a 17. I appreciate SIU for looking past scores. Now Navy Vet let's look at your racist statements. You foolishly compared the NAACP and the Black Panther Party with the Klan. Come on Navy Vet,the Klan hung AA,killed whites,Jews who disagreed with them and hated Catholics. Did you receive a failing grade in history? Many of the AA students that attended school with me are now teaches,lawyers,engineers,own their own businesses etc. These students proved that a score on the ACT or SAT did not predict a person's future academic success. Now you stated that an African American students took your spot. So therefore you had to join the Navy,one of the most racist branches of the arm forces. Check out the number of past and present AA officers. The student population at SIU for several decades usually has been around 22,000 to 25,000 students. African students traditionally represent less than 8% of the student body, are you saying you should were rejected from the 20,000 plus other spots. Your racist comments about students drinking 40 ounces is too stupid to discuss. While attending school at SIU, I experienced racist threats walking down the street and being attacked twice by whites. However,I refuse to paint all whites students I met with a broad brush as racist In fact whites students joined with AA to march on the SIU President's house in 1968 to protest discriminatory polices. protested the war and assisted in making content of some of the classes relevant. I would recommended SIU to students of all races. I became a man at SIU

I have three family members attending SIU, and each is appalled (!!) at the low quality of English classes. Most are taught by students who barely have command of the language, give litttle if any instruction, and leave the teaching to independent computer work.

These assistants don't even understand the more advanced vocabulary of some of their students!

Wow, All the people that hate to here the truth. The reality is if the black students would act like resonsible students and acctually try to better themselves and their image, without acting gangster, maybe society would have a much different view. But that will never happen, because we all run away from the truth don't we? If we had a white student that had corn rows and acted like a punk, would other whites as well as blacks call that person white trash? you bet they would, JUST DONT SAY BLACK, grow up everyone or maybe I mean just GROW!
