URI in recent years was a top party school but the new president has worked to crack down on this image. Having some drinks with friends in your room can lead to getting laid quickly or getting fined 50 dollars. This being said, if you are looking to go to a school where frat life is pervasive and stereotypically "fratty", love nothing more than to chill and drink with the bros and sketchy overly tan sorority sisters, this is definitely the place for you. I will be transferring at the end of this year, and I suggest if you start to feel like the whole URI "scene" isn't for you, do the same quickly. If you buckle down the work is interesting and rewarding in itself, but URI is not a school where academic curiosity overlaps with social life or vice versa. In a way it is very similar to high school; most students want to get through their classes as fast as possible to pursue whatever the hell it is that they pursue; mostly drinking, smoking, or taking pictures of each other for face book (this would be the female population). That being said, URI will give you a good education, you can certainly find study abroad opportunities, but don't expect to come out world wise and thinking positively about our generation leading the world. The surrounding area blows, if you are looking for a college town environment look elsewhere. Frat houses on the beach during unswimmable months=URI. I am actually a double major, so my grades for academics are more for what Ive experianced as a whole, Ive had a few great professors and some who give out As like candy because if they didnt, the 80 percent retention rate of freshmen would probably be at catastrophic levels.
