I am so very glad that I chose to go to UMass Amherst. I got into higher ranked schools, and chose UMass due to its relatively low cost (and because of my grades, the scholarship I was given!), its size, the number of clubs, organizations and other activities, and the depth and breadth of its majors. I also liked that it had an honors program. In fact, for such a largeish school, it really feels quite small when you live there - you know the people in your residential area, you know the people in your classes, in your clubs, and you see the same people over and over again. And yet, because of its size, you have the opportunities of a large university at your disposal.

I liked that it was a residential college, where lots of students stayed in the dorms on the weekends - thus there was a lot to do on campus at all hours, every day. The campus being so close to a thriving, funky town, and linked to the other colleges in the area and to Northampton by bus, was a boon. Students there were not afraid to study hard, nor were they afraid to play - a very good balance.

The school offered a wealth of opportunities, which I took advantage of, for independent study, internships, national and foreign exchanges - I did a lot. I feel like I was able to do more there than I would have at the other schools I was considering.

Since I've moved out of Massachusetts, I see how well respected the UMass Amherst degree is. In fact, when I was last overseas, someone ask where I'd gone to university. When I replied, "UMass Amherst," I got a goggle eyed stare in response. After a beat, the person finally said, "Good school!" And they really meant it.

I recommend this school to anyone.
