I have been at the University of the South for three years now. In all honesty although it is a beautiful place the school itself is not at all what I would recommend for anyone looking for a good overall college experience. The surrounding town is boring and there is little to do, but the real problem is the University itself provides little options besides going to parties. Don't get me wrong, parties are fun , but after awhile going out drinking with the same people in the same dirty fraternity houses every night gets old. It is hard to form real relationships outside of drinking at Sewanee. The residential life program is ridiculous. Even as a senior often you end up in a dorm that does not even have air conditioning. You have to have special permission to live off campus. The meal plan is ok for the first couple years, but eating in the same place everyday gets old and there are no other options. They make you live on campus most of the time and if you live on campus you also must pay for the meal plan, which is expensive there are no options for less meals a day like there are at most schools. A small girl who eats 2-3 times a day pays the same amount of money a football player who eats 7 times a day pays. The residential restrictions and meal restrictions worsen the social situation, because there are no alternatives to being on campus. The gown system at Sewanee is ridiculous, because it creates a cast system among students. While other reviews may say that everyone at Sewanee is equal I do not believe this for a minute if you are an average student this is not the place for you, because you will not be treated fairly. They still have matrons in the dorms, which are older women who usually mean well, however I personally do not think that 20 year olds need to have baby sitters. After all part of college is learning to be independent. Many of the students here are snoddy and care to much about money and what kind of car you drive. Everyone here drinks too much all of the time, which can be fun, but it can also get really old when that is all that people do. The academics at Sewanee are challenging, however I do not feel that they prepare you for the real world. Career services is not much help when it comes to finding jobs and internships. Overall I feel that going to a different school would have been a better move for me to develop both socially and to be academically prepared for life after College.
