I also attended the Middle College at Greensboro College, and since those were the most wonderful years of my life I feel I owe it to the school to point out some positive aspects.

For those who don't know, the Middle College are high school kids who are permitted to take some classes at the college. We aren't allowed in the dorms, so bear that in mind—I have no doubt the dorms really are terrible. Remember also that my interaction with other students was limited. I can only tell you about the campus itself.

Anyway. Greensboro College is a beautiful little patch of grass and trees in the middle of a city. Basically, it's perfect, because you have the trees and grass and then the surrounding city to explore for fun. The whole campus is full of flowers, hedges, trees, grass, etc; it really is beautiful, and well-maintained. In spring it always smells like freshly mowed grass and the blossoms on the trees are truly beautiful. There are tons of benches and walkways to sit on or enjoy throughout the campus, there are benches beneath huge old lovely trees and you can picnic on the grass.

The buildings, some have said are old. This is true, but they also are quite majestic because of that. The outside of most buildings have graceful white columns and the insides are elegant too. It's true some parts are decrepit, but then there are parts which you just can't find in buildings nowadays, like the ballroom in Main Building.

Surrounding city: Don't buy what they tell you, Greensboro is not that boring. GC is very close to Elm Street and Tate Street, it is right in the middle of town and there are tons of places to go to if you just look. There are lots of cute coffeeshops, Yum Yums ice cream store, everything that UNCG (which is close by) has access to without the horrible crime. Yes, stuff gets stolen, but lock you door and don't leave stuff lying around, it's not too bad. There is terrible crime at UNCG and people get raped there and all kinds of stuff, so if it comes to a choice between GC and UNCG, GC is much safer. Mostly a cute little college that no one really ventures into.

The faculty—everyone who I talked to was very helpful and nice. I haven't met any teacher who was stupid or mean, but then again, the majority of the faculty I met was in the art department. If you're an artist, definately consider coming here. Ray and Jim are gems, teachers like them are hard to find, and they will really help you improve. You DON'T need some large fancy art school like SCAD or an Art Institute to improve. If improvement is what you want, come here, because the art department are full of some of the nicest people, and I was incredibly lucky to be taught by them. Secondly, if you're an artist, Greensboro is just full of things you will enjoy and you are so close to them. All the people here complaining about how there is nothing to do, are probably sports people. But if you're into the arts, this is the ideal place for you.

The community: from what I observed the students didn't seem to really know each other or like each other. I made lots of friends in my art classes. To make friends, I feel like you'll have to be prepared to get involved with the city itself, not the school. The school won't help you with making friends. But the city is chock full of things going on (once again, especially if you like the arts.)

The cafeteria has basic items, but they get so old. I almost never ate there. But there are so many food places nearby, just spend your money on Subway, Jimmy Johns, pizza, groceries instead. UNCG has a terrible cafeteria also by the way in case you're trying to decide between the two.

That's all I have to say about GC which was such a beloved place for me. You're probably thinking, if you liked it so much why didn't you go there for college? I'll tell you. One, I wanted to graduate from somewhere with a recognizable name. Two, I wanted a full and well-rounded education, and I don't think GC will give you the best possible classes. Three, most importantly, I didn't want to spend the next four years in the same city I had spent my whole life in, on the same campus I went to high school in.

However I miss it terribly every day, and I urge you not to write off this school just because it has bad dorms and easy classes. Those are the only two things wrong with it, really. Everything else is all what you make it. This is NOT as terrible a school as everyone seems to be saying. You would be much more miserable at East Carolina or somewhere isolated. good luck with your choice.
