very practically oriented

attracts practical students

even as a theory nut, I find the practical bent comforting because it means I'm likely to be able to find a JOB

Student body:

not as bright as they think they are

tend to be complainers (they still want to think they're bright, so they blame the school for their failures)

Mines is a tad over-eager to admit girls because of The Ratio… this means that if you are female, don't take your hall to represent the school average. Girls tend to be on the ditzy side, sadly.

Don't get discouraged from all this; in general, I've found Mines kids to be pretty awesome. They just have a few predictable faults that you can get used to pretty quickly.

Clubs/Organizations:

For heaven's sakes, BE CAREFUL. There are approximately a zillion clubs on campus, and as a highly driven Mines student, you will be tempted to join about half of them. DON'T DO IT. I can't tell you how many people I've seen who overestimated their ability to handle all these commitments and burned out.

The Area:

Golden has GREAT weather! I say this as a Californian. I want to live here permanently once I graduate.

The only crime you really have to worry about is theft; we joke that Golden has a negative crime rate. For those of you from "grittier" areas (like me), you'll be shocked when you realize that you can walk around in Denver alone without having to worry about anything!

The city of Golden is gorgeous. Clear Creek runs down the middle, Coors puffs its hop-scented steam into the air, and the city is basically MADE for tourists, so statues, restaurants, and impeccable landscaping are the norm.

Academics:

I find them a little less challenging than I had hoped.

However, they are a huge improvement over high school.

It's my opinion that as long as you go to a reasonably good school, it doesn't matter whether it's Mines-caliber or Caltech-caliber. Yeah, you'll get bragging rights, but in the end the quality of education is pretty high wherever you decide to go. Once you've been in the workforce for a job or two, it doesn't even matter at all where you went to college. So don't sweat it!
