The University of Rhode Island is an average university, so if you're out of state there's absolutely no justifying the insane price tag, unless you're entering the engineering, ocean related, pharmacy, and apart of CELS (college of environmental and life sciences), because that's where all the resources are put in. After all, the best, newest dorms (hillside, browning) are reserved for science, nursing, and pharmacy majors.

I entered as a freshman and transferred right out after my first and only semester. Definitely do your research before enrolling, it's an EXTREMELY Greek school. If you want an active social life and to make friends as quickly as possible, you have to rush. However the university is beginning to crack down on greek life, as multiple chapters have been kicked off campus and punishments are harsher. The University sent a letter to the remaining chapters letting them know if they mess up, they're on their own. Also, don't let anyone tell you about URI's "anti-hazing" policy. Everyone hazes, there's no avoiding it.

If you want to be able to go into Providence, or Newport, your best bet is making a friend with a car. Most of the parties and students are all down the line (naragansett) and unless you feel like taking a $50 cab ride, you're stuck on campus. Basically, you have to have a car, or have a friend with a car. Don't rely on the bus, and cabs are a fortune considering everything's so far away.

The campus itself is absolutely beautiful, but it's also a work out. It's hilly and at least a 10 minute walk to class, so gaining the freshman 15 is almost impossible.

Overall and most importantly, if you're a person who isn't all about greek life, needs a busy surrounding area, and small class sizes, URI isn't for you.
