I am a graduate student from the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department. My experience with the department has been really negative. If you are not a white, able-bodied woman, then you will have a hard time here, which is unfortunate because Gender Studies in general should be about inclusivity. Also, if you are a survivor of sexual violence, then good luck! My research deals with the linkage between race and rape culture and I honestly have a hard time finding support for my research and getting fair treatment from faculties. I am not the only survivor with this issue nor am I asking for "special" treatment (which is an outdated term but hello? people still ascribe to it here??). Many other survivors complained about this as well. The department is also very concern about their prestige and research and rarely venture out into the field of activism, so if you are into activism then this department might not be a good fit for you.
