I am an African American woman who started Tufts in the late 80s. Not only is Tufts a predominantly white University, it is close to Boston, a city not well known for racial tolerance. But in spite of all that, I had a wonderful experience at Tufts. I felt that the African Americans in leadership positions -faculty, upperclass people, and adminstrators were very supportive. I also felt that those in leadership positions who weren't minorities, supported diversity. I was often the only black person in my classes, and sometimes I felt that instructors were insensitive, but because of the atmosphere, I had gained the confidence to speak out when I thought it was necessary. I learned a lot at Tufts. I felt that most of my professors were top quality and very supportive. The curriculum was very flexible and interesting courses were offered. Tufts encouraged independence in students, with its Experimental College and its extensive study abroad program, among many other things. Because it's located near Boston, students aren't dependent upon the Tufts social life, there are other schools to socialize with, and lots going on in Cambridge and Boston. Though the social life at Tufts wasn't so bad. Lisa Manning
