BEWARE of this university. It truly lives up to its nickname:

NAU (Northern Arizona University)actually stands for

Not A University!

This is so very true. Very poor administration, advisers, professors, staff, etc. All this school cares about is the bottom line. They want $$$$$$$ and want to give nothing in return. They use and abuse students on a daily basis.

The few good professors are either leaving, looking for another job or will be retiring soon.

The degree programs are a joke. You either get told your degree means nothing or is worth very little once you are out in the job market. NAU is frowned upon by many employers and if you attempt to get your Masters at another school you are more than likely going to have to repeat many classes that you took at NAU. Why? Because they use lots of grad students to teach classes and sign off on those classes. Those class are not accepted on the Masters level…even at NAU itself. Yep..that's right. NAU will not honor some of its own classes if they were taught by a grad student which means you will be paying NAU twice for the same class. NAU IS A HUGE SCAM!

NAU is combining schools to save money, but aren't increasing the number of professors, majors, advisers, housing, etc.

Campus housing is deplorable with mold, poorly trained staff, heating and cooling problems, fires in dorms every year and much more. The cost is just below living off campus. The family housing is unacceptable and rundown. You can't get a roommate change unless that person chooese to leave or dies. Most of the dorms are old, dirty and disgusting. During the winter there is no snow/ice removal which results in many students with injuries. Be ready to pay for medical bills due to poor winter maintenance including the flu and colds because you won't have any hot water for weeks.

Don't even attempt to live off campus as Flagstaff is not student friendly. A one bedroom starts at $800 and goes up quickly. Cost of food, clothes, toiletries, etc …are out of sight. Living in this community will put you so far in debt you may never get out. The community does not support the students in any way. Instead it sucks the life out of students like a vampire. There is no industry with the exception of tourism and that is almost non-existent.

Run, run, run away from NAU. If you decide to attend NAU be sure that all your classes can transfer in and out of NAU. NAU will claim that many classes you have taken at another school don't transfer. Then they will make you take a ton of classes that later you will find out…won't transfer to another school as anything other than electives. NAU sucks! NAU truly is:

NOT A UNIVERISTY!

questionHi, my name is Anh and I'm a graduate High school student from Phoenix planning to attend an Arizona university in the Fall of 2010. My two choices are between ASU and NAU. I read your comment on NAU and I was just wondering how the environment and social atmosphere was like for you at NAU? If I head up to NAU, I would have to live in a dorm. Also, was the financial aspect of attending NAU demanding? For me, I have scholarships as well as grants to cover the majority of my expense at both universities. If you wouldn't mind taking the time to share some more of your experience at NAU it would greatly help me out on my decision and I'd love to hear your advice. Thanks in advance.
responseAfter having attended three semesters as a geographic information systems student, they suddenly changed the department and the graduation criteria. This meant nearly half of my coursework was flushed. My degree program morphed into some urban development hogwash; thus I have abandodn this crazy institution. They will soak you financially by having an online student pay 250 dollars for health and recreation; of course the tuition schedule is fixed so that you get screwed somehow, someway and everyday!
commentI agree! After doing two semesters at this totally pointless, poorly managed craptastic campus, I am now ruined financial aid wise. The classes will not transfer to any other college and once you attend, your financial aid at other institutions is burnt. Run FOrest run.

commentI must concur with the assessment that NAU is, in fact, not a university! I graduated in 2000 with a mountain of debt for BS in sociology (aim high lol) I applied to the MA program in applied sociology the semester before graduating. I diddnt get in…the department head at the time explained to me
we allowed in several minority students with your undergraduate gpa…how Can I justify admitting a white male with that gpa?
Off the record of course, I won't use their name. I attended as a provisional student for a year with no student aid, had to work a full time job at 6.10 an hour, and take night courses.

That year I had a 3.8 gpa in grad school, an inferior white male for sure.after being accepted as a member of the sociology ma community I maintained a 3.85 gpa overall in my course work. There was little to zero guidance as to thesis-internship the last step before graduating with an ma. I worked as a grad assistant to a professor, unpaid, for three semesters. I did this for credit…meaning that I was paying nau to do work for nau.
In 2006 my mother became I'll, which became my number one priority. NAI sent me a letter saying I was at the limit of the time I had to complete my ma.

I lobbied for more time, and found a cold bureaucratic system that served personal power to say "no" rather than student success. By the time I got any kind of extention they extended me 6 weeks, after 9 weeks of asking for more time and explaining my situation to more bureaucrats than I can remember. I had previously submitted a study proposal to the RIB (institutional review board for the use of human subjects) and they took two semesters a full college year to approve, even though I went personally every week to check on the progress.

I was thrown out of my program in May of 2006 then of course the recession hit and everyone Including myself struggled, clawed, and did without, graduate school became an after thought to keeping a roof over me and buying groceries etc. In flagstaff arizona which honesty has prices on basic goods and services, which like Hawaii, will blow your mind the first time you see them. 800 for a one bedroom is correct, probably more by now.

Ten years after the fact 2015 I tried to reenter my ma program to finish up. The university told me "You will have to retake over half of your course work because your courses have expired" to which I responded, then all your professors ph.d.'s must be "expired" by now as well since most at that time had received their ph.d.'s in the late 60s early 70s.
Yeah, I'm not paying a 3rd rate state institution twice for courses I still owe the government for.
Screw NAU! Run away, keep running! Unless you absolutely must live in flagstaff for some reason, health etc. We do have very clean air up here. It's expensive, the university is ruining what Character flagstaff once had, raising tuition constantly, and is still ranked at the hind end of arizona schools, which is saying something.
Do not attend NAU unless you have no choice other than earl Schibes college of car repainting and social work.
I have a ginormous mountain of student debt, intentionally road blocked from gun shiny my degree by the institution I was paying for education (epic commitment to students) and my degree would have been basically worthless anyway.
Save your time, save your money, save yourselves, attend NAP at your own peril.
NAU DEFINITELY NOT A UNIVERSITY.
