Positive Negative Neutral Advice
U of I was a very positive experiencePolitical Science
U of I was a very positive experience for me. Despite the fact that the U is more or less in the middle of a cornfield, the surrounding town has much to offer. My advice is to get off campus as often as possible and take time to meet the people in the community (and I don't mean at Kam's). There is much more to college than what you learn in the classroom.

Question
The university is quite large as it isQuite BrightChemistry
The university is quite large as it is easy to find yourself becoming lost not only in geographical direction but scholastic as well. The student body is huge so no one is here to hold your hand and make sure your doing ok. If you take it upon yourself to study hard and seek guidance, there is plenty of help available. The competition is very high (everyone is as smart or smarter than you). Social life is very attractive here, plenty of things to do and tons of people to meet. If you're the type of person who is self disciplined and wants to attend a college that will set you apart from the rest of college bound kids then I would suggest looking into UIUC.

Question
The University is truly what you make ofQuite BrightCommunications
The University is truly what you make of it. Needing to serve such a large student population, I believe there are many opportunities on campus. It up to you to find them.

Considering UIUC boasts the largest Greek system in the country, I feel the need to address the topic as an "independent." I was never involved with the Greek system. Not only was it not "my thing" but I was lucky enough to meet many wonderful people my freshman year at Allen Hall. Creative, open-minded, honest, sincere and diverse people who are still my best friends. In my three years here, I have never had a problem finding something to do. There are tons of house parties and the bars are open till 2 am if you're in the mood.

The music scene is alright. Quality local bands are hit or miss but lots of great independent music comes through Champaign-Urbana.

Now on to academics. I am an advertising and sociology major. I have been challenged. When you are starting out, taking lots of survey courses (100s), its easy to fall into the "I don't need to go to class" mindset, as I did but I've finally realized that going to class and paying attention works. Who would have thought? Put forth the effort and it will pay off. There are tons of interesting courses offered and lots of interesting professors. No regrets.
